Women’s Soccer Team Returns Home for Four Matches

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State women's soccer team returns home to begin a four-match home stand, Friday evening at 7 p.m., versus Alabama Huntsville and then at home on Sunday at 1 p.m., versus West Alabama.  VSU began the season with five of its first six matches away from home.

The Blazers enter the weekend with a 3-1-2 record overall and a 1-1 mark in Gulf South Conference play, following a split of two road matches last weekend to open league play.  VSU won 3-1 at Auburn Montgomery and dropped a 1-0 decision at Montevallo.  UAH enters with a 3-2 record overall and a 1-1 mark in league play after downing Shorter 5-0 and losing 3-0 to No. 25 Lee last weekend.  West Alabama travels to West Georgia, before heading to Valdosta for Sunday's match as the Tigers are 1-4-1 overall and 1-1 in league play with a 3-0 loss to No. 25 Lee and an 8-0 win over Shorter.
 
Against AUM, junior Ansley Decenzo scored two goals in the match as VSU raced out to a 3-0 lead 62 minutes into the contest.  AUM did scored the final goal, but the Blazers out-shot the Warhawks 16-6 and 9-2 in shots on goal for the match.  Montevallo scored the lone goal of the match 31 minutes in, while VSU had numerous opportunities, including a missed penalty kick in the second half, which would've tied the match at that point. 
 
For the season, VSU has scored 14 goals for a 2.33 goals per game clip, while allowing seven goals (1.17). VSU has 76 shots with 45 on frame (.592), while the opposition has attempted 53 shots with 22 on target (.415).  The Blazers have 11 assists for the season with 15 saves and 35 corner kicks, while going 1 for 2 in penalty kicks.  
 
Senior Ana Moleka leads the team with 12 points on five goals and two assists, while both Decenzo and Wooldridge are tied for second with seven points.  Decenzo has two goals and a team-high three assists, while Wooldridge has three goals and one assist.  Wooldridge leads the team with 13 shots and six on target.  

In goal, freshman Tori Vliet has played and started in a team-high five games for 393:37 minutes and has a 1.37 goals-against average, while recording 12 saves and faced 40 shots.  She is 2-1-1 on the year.  Both junior Emma Pruett and sophomore Clair Timberlake also have seen action this season. 
 
Head coach Stephen Andrew is 53-41-9 at VSU in his seventh season, while he is 193-96-18 in his 17thseason overall of coaching.  
 
Nationally speaking, the Blazers lead the GSC with 11 assists for 15th nationally, while they are second in the GSC in total goals (14) for 22nd nationally and second in total points (39) for 25th nationally.  VSU's 7.5 shots on goal per game is good for second in the league and 52nd nationally.  Individually, Decenzo is tied for the league-lead in assists (3) for 19th nationally, while Moleka is tied for the league-lead in total goals (5) for tenth nationally and she is 11th nationally in total points (12) to lead the league.  
 
The Chargers enter the match having scored 12 goals and allowed eight thus far.  UAH has 74 shots for the season with 27 on target (.365) and have allowed 60 shots with 24 on frame (.400).  UAH has six assists for the season with 16 saves and 22 corner kicks, while going 2 for 2 in penalty kicks.  Individually, Jayla Gillespie leads the team with six points on three goals, while three different players have four points each with two goals.  Six different players have registered an assist this season.  Gillespie leads the team with 13 shots and five on target (.385) with two game winners.  Gillesipie's two game winners leads the GSC and puts her eighth nationally.
 
In goal, Ardis Haskell, Karli Newton and Cece Szopa each have seen significant time between the pipes this season.  Haskell is 2-1, allowing four goals (1.83 GAA), with eight saves and faced 31 shots in a team-high 196:56 minutes.  
 
Head coach James Bellamy is 25-30-10 at UAH in five seasons and is 1-2 against VSU at the helm of the Chargers.  
 
VSU leads the all-time series 8-4, but UAH snapped a three-game skid with a 1-0 victory in Huntsville, Ala., on Oct. 16, 2022.  Maialen Mera Torres scored the lone goal in the match in the 30th minute.  VSU is 5-0 all-time against UAH in Valdosta and have outscored the Chargers 15-8 in the 12 matches overall.
 
The Tigers have scored ten goals in six games this season, while allowing eight goals.  UWA has 58 shots with 32 on target, while allowing 54 shots and 27 on frame.  The Tigers have six assists this season and have a 1.33 goals-against average with 19 saves.  
 
Individually, Venla Makela leads the team with four goals on ten shots and six on target.  She sits 27thnationally and third in the GSC in total goals.  Summer Fox is second on the team in goals with two, while Aileen Charles leads the team with two assists.  Charles also has ten shots on the year with a team-high seven on target.  In goal, Dior Wilson has logged all 540 minutes, allowing eight goals (1.33 GAA) with 19 saves this season.  Head coach Sam Wilson is in his first season at the helm of the Tigers.  
 
The series is tied 6-6-2 all-time with UWA, but the Tigers have won five of the last six, including a 2-1 victory in Livingston, Ala., on Oct. 14, 2022.  VSU scored the opening goal on a PK and held a 1-0 lead until the 83rd minute when UWA scored two goals within 1:27 seconds of each other at the 82:21 mark and the 83:48 mark.  VSU is 3-6-1 against UWA in the last ten meetings, but is 4-1-1 all-time at home against the Tigers.
 
Following the two matches this weekend, VSU continues at home next week as it entertains Christian Brothers on Sept. 29 at 7 p.m., and Union on Oct. 1 at 1 p.m., at the VSU Soccer Complex.
