Blazer Women’s Soccer Opens GSC Play with 3-1 Victory at Auburn Montgomery

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Valdosta State women's soccer team scored two goals in the first half and one in the second for a 3-1 victory at Auburn Montgomery Friday evening in the Gulf South Conference opener for both teams.

VSU improved to 3-0-2 on the year and 1-0 in league play as it outshot the Warhawks 19-6 and 9-2 in shots on target.  Junior Ansley Decenzo scored two goals on two shots, while junior Molly Wooldridge scored one goal on five shots and two on target.  Senior Ana Moleka had one assist as did sophomore Katherine Kimmel.  Reigning GSC Defensive Player of the Week, freshman Tori Vliet, allowed one goal with one save in 90 minutes between the pipes.

AUM fell to 1-4 on the year and 0-1 in league play as it was led by Laia Gonzalez with three shots, two on goal and one score, while Marta Gonzalez added the assist. VSU improved to 7-1 all-time against AUM and have won the last seven in the series, while outscoring the Warhawks 31-9.

Shots from sophomore Victoria Bahr and senior Samantha Worley set the tone 20 minutes in for the Blazers, but AUM goalkeeper Karla Gayfan was up to the task.  After a corner kick by the Blazers at the 24:13 mark, Wooldridge put away the first goal off the assist from Kimmel 31 seconds later for a 1-0 lead.  It was Wooldridge's third score of the season and Kimmel's second assist.

Just under ten minutes later, Decenzo scored her second goal of the year at the 36:14 mark for a 2-0 lead.  The Blazers had four more shots throughout the remainder of the half, but were unable to tack on more goals.  VSU held an 11-1 lead in shots for the first half, while Gayfan had five saves in the opening stanza.

The Blazers continued the pressure early in the second half and Decenzo scored off an assist from Moleka at the 62:27 mark for a 3-0 lead.  Just 3:06 later, Gonzalez scored for AUM and a 3-1 score.  With a bit of momentum following the score, Vliet made her lone save minutes later, on another shot from L. Gonzalez.  VSU added four more shots down the stretch, while AUM had two more shots.

VSU now heads to Montevallo for a Sunday matchup with the Falcons, beginning at 2 p.m. ET.  Fans can access links to live stats and streaming of the match at vstateblazers.com.  Montevallo and West Georgia tied 0-0 Friday evening.
