Blazer Women’s Soccer Opens Gulf South Conference Play on the Road

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State women's soccer team opens the 2023 Gulf South Conference slate on the road this week with trips to Auburn Montgomery and Montevallo.  
 
VSU enters the week with a 2-0-2 record after tying No. 2 Embry-Riddle last week (1-1) and winning 5-1 at Georgia College.  The Blazers and AUM kick on Friday evening at 6 p.m. ET, while VSU and Montevallo square off on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET.

Against ERAU, the Blazers trailed 1-0 at half, but sophomore Victoria Bahr scored in the 60th minute to tie the match and freshman goalkeeper Tori Vliet made a couple of outstanding saves late in the contest for the tie.  ERAU outshot VSU 12-5 and 7-2 in shots on goal.  Vliet finished with six saves in the match.  
 
On Saturday, VSU played its third game away from home this season at Georgia College and the Blazers took command of the game early, scoring two goals in the first half and three in the second half as junior Molly Wooldridge scored two goals and assisted on one goal.  Bahr scored her second goal of the week on a penalty kick.  VSU outshot GC 20-10 and 14-4 in shots on goal.  Vliet and sophomore Claire Timberlake both saw time in goal in the match.  
 
For the season, the Blazers are led by senior Ana Moleka who has five goals and one assist for 11 points. She has nine shots and six on target with one game winner.  The five goals by Moleka, in four games thus far, ties last year's individual season-high for goals.  Wooldridge is second in scoring with five points on two goals and one assist, while Bahr has four points with two goals.  The Blazers have scored 11 goals as a team and registered nine assists for 31 points, while taking 51 shots (.216) with 31 on target (.608).  
 
In goal, Vliet has logged a team-high 213:37 minutes, allowing four goals for a 1.69 goals against average, while registering eight saves with a 1-0-1 record.  Junior Emma Pruett has a 1-0-1 record in 135 minutes of action, allowing one goal with two saves.  Defensively, the Blazers have surrendered five goals with six assists for 16 points, while the opposition has taken 36 shots (.139) with 16 on target (.444). 
 
Vliet and Wooldridge were named GSC Defensive and Offensive Players of the Week, respectively, this week, while Moleka earned GSC Player of the Week honors last week.
 
Head coach Stephen Andrew is in his seventh season at the helm of the Blazers he is 52-40-9 at VSU, while he is 192-95-18 in his 17th season of coaching.  This year marked the first year under Andrew the Blazers went undefeated during regular season non-conference play.  
 
Nationally speaking, the Blazers are seventh nationally and tied for tops in the league in total assists (9), while they are 11th nationally and second in the league in total goals (11) and ninth nationally in total points (31) for second in the league.  VSU is second in the league and 19th nationally in scoring offense at a 2.75 clip.  
 
Individually, Moleka is fourth nationally in goals scored to lead the league, while Decenzo is seventh nationally in assists (3).  Moleka is fifth in total points (11) to lead the league.  
 
AUM enters with a 1-3 record on the year after a 5-0 victory Sunday over Albany State.  The Warhawks have losses to Florida Tech (4-0), Georgia College (2-1) and Lynn (2-0).  Sydney Garth leads the team with two goals and two assists for six points.  She has nine shots with five on frame.  Laia Gonzalez leads the team with three assists this season and has five points.  As a team, the Warhawks have scored six goals with nine assists, while taking 54 shots (.111) and 28 on frame (.519).  In goal, Karla Gaytan has logged 315 minutes, surrendering eight goals with a 2.29 GAA and 17 saves.  She is 1-3 on the year and faced 39 shots.  Karla Guzman-Ortiz has seen 45 minutes between the pipes.  As a team, the Warhawks have allowed eight goals, six assists, 40 shots (.200) and 25 on frame (.625).  
 
The Warhawks are under the direction of Julianne Herrity who is in her fourth season at the helm of the program as she is 11-29-2 there.  AUM leads the league and is seventh nationally in assists with nine, while Laia Gonzalez is tied for first in the GSC with three assists and seventh nationally.  
 
VSU leads the all-time series with the Warhawks 6-1 and the Blazers have won the last six in the series after AUM won 1-0 in Valdosta in the first meeting on Sept. 4, 2016.  VSU has outscored the Warhawks 28-8 in the seven meetings and have shutout the Warhawks three times, including last season in a 4-0 victory in Valdosta in the season finale.  Wooldridge had two goals in last year's meeting, while current junior Ansley Decenzo had one, along with former Blazer Bailey Hern.
 
Montevallo enters the week with a 3-1 record and will host West Georgia Friday, before entertaining the Blazers on Sunday afternoon.  The Falcons are coming off a 2-0 loss at home on Sunday to Nova Southeastern after UM had wins over Kentucky Wesleyan (6-0), Trevecca Nazarene (4-1) and West Alabama in a non-conference match, 1-0.  
 
The Falcons are led by Madeline Milby who has a team-high five points on one goal and three assists as her three assists is good for seventh nationally and tied for tops in the GSC.  She has six shots with two on target and one game winner, along with converting one penalty kick.  Kaeri Ward leads the team with two goals on the year.  As a team, the Falcons have scored 11 goals with eight assists for 30 points, while recording 61 shots (.180) with 29 on frame (.475).  
 
In goal, Emily Hounsell is 2-1 with a 1.00 GAA and 13 saves in 270 minutes, while Jolie Cazale is 1-0 in 90 minutes with one shutout and one save.  The team has allowed three goals with one assist for seven points, while the opposition has taken 29 shots (.103) with 17 on target (.586).  
 
VSU leads the all-time series with Montevallo 4-3-1, but the Falcons have gone 3-0-1 in the last four meetings.  VSU's last win came in a 2-1 decision at Montevallo on Sept. 16, 2018.  UM won 2-0 last season in Valdosta on Oct. 21, 2022.  The Blazers have gone 2-1 in matches in Montevallo, Ala.
