Blazer Tennis Teams Head to Auburn Montgomery Wednesday; Host West Florida Saturday

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State men's and women's tennis teams head to Auburn Montgomery for the final road trip of the regular season Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET, in Montgomery, Ala.  VSU then returns home to host West Florida on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the VSU Tennis Complex.
 
The Blazer men's tennis team is No. 3 nationally and 12-0 on the year with a 7-0 mark in the Gulf South Conference.  The Blazer women's tennis team sits 6-7 overall and 5-3 in GSC play.  The men's team leads the league standings by a half a game over West Florida and 1.5 games over AUM (5-1) and two games over Lee (5-2).  
 
AUM enters with a 12-6 record overall and the 5-1 mark in league play.  The No. 23 Warhawks dropped their first conference match with a 4-3 setback at No. 5 West Florida on Sunday.  AUM battled back from a 3-1 deficit, but UWF's Santiago Kearney won 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 at No. 3 singles over Giuseppe Bonaiuti for the victory for the Argos.  
 
The Warhawks are led by Titouan Le Maout who is 14-2 this spring and 6-0 in conference play, mainly playing at No. 5 singles.  Adrian Contreras is 14-3 this spring and 4-2 in league play, while Muhamad Bedwan is 12-4 and 6-0 in league play.  In doubles, Thibault Jacq and Antoine Renard are 10-1 and 3-0 in conference play, while Bedwan and Bonaiuti are 7-3 in doubles and 3-0 in league play.  
 
VSU leads the all-time series with AUM 8-0 dating back to Feb. 20, 2011.  The Blazers are 3-0 in Montgomery and 4-0 in Valdosta, while going 1-0 at Lagoon Park & O'Connor Tennis Center in Montgomery, Ala.  
 
The No. 5-ranked Argos enter with a 14-2 record overall and a 7-1 mark in league play.  UWF's only league loss was on Feb. 18 in a 4-3 setback at Lee.  UWF has won eight-straight matches.  The Argos are led by Facundo Bermejo who is No. 20 in the latest ITA rankings in singles and is 11-3 this year, including 6-1 in GSC play at the top spot in the lineup. Tomas Descarrega is 8-5 this year and 4-2 in GSC play as he is No. 40 nationally, while Mateo Martinez is No. 63 in singles and 9-3 overall, while he is 5-1 in GSC play.  In doubles, Descarrega and Bermejo are No. 2 nationally at 13-1 overall and 6-0 in GSC play.  
 
West Florida leads the series 23-16 dating back to Feb. 26, 2006 and have won four-straight in the series.  VSU's last win came in the GSC Championship match on Apr. 24, 2021, with a 4-2 victory in Montgomery, Ala.  Both VSU and UWF have combined for 28 GSC Men's Tennis Titles with each having 14 and at least one of the two teams have been in the conference championship match consecutively since 1994.  
 
For the Blazer men, Mack, who enters ranked No. 3 nationally in singles, is 19-1 this season and 10-0 this spring, while he is a perfect 7-0 in GSC play.  Junior Christian Wedel is 11-1 this spring and 7-0 in league play as he is No. 71 nationally, while junior Pedro Cordeiro is 10-2 this spring and 7-0 in conference play.  In doubles, Mack and junior Rodrigo Carvalho are 11-1 this season and 7-0 in league play at the top spot for 34th nationally and have won nine-straight matches.  Senior Christian Felline and sophomore Lamar Bartley are 6-2 and 4-1 in the GSC, while Wedel/Cordeiro are 8-1 and 3-1 in conference play.  
 
On the women's side, the Blazers are 6-7 overall and 5-3 in GSC play.  West Alabama leads the standings at 9-0, while AUM is second with a 14-4 mark overall and a 6-1 record in league play.  Mississippi College is 7-2, followed by Lee at 5-2, West Florida at 6-3 and VSU at 5-3.  Montevallo sits just behind VSU at 5-4.  
 
This spring, freshman Kayla Greco is 7-4 and 6-2 in GSC play to lead the team, while junior Olivia Pezo is 6-5 and 5-3 in league play, as is sophomore Anastasiia Vorobiova.  Freshman Jorja Reynolds is 5-4 and 5-2 in league play.  In doubles, Greco/Pezo are 7-4 and 6-2 in GSC play at the No. 2 spot, while freshman Evelyn Altmaier and junior Natalie Kohoutkova are 5-1 this spring both overall and in league play at the No. 3 spot.  
 
The Warhawks are led by Regina Urbiola who is 11-4 this spring and 4-3 in league play for 49th nationally.  Ane Ibarra is a perfect 10-0 this spring and 6-0 in league play, while Ana Villalvazo is 12-2 overall and 5-1 in league play.  Estefania Garcia is 11-5 at the top spot and 4-3 in league play.  In doubles, Garcia/Urbiola are 13th nationally and 12-3 this spring and 5-2 in league play at the No. 1 position.   AUM leads the all-time series 7-1 and has won the last three meetings.  VSU's lone win came on Mar. 3, 2020, in a 4-3 victory in Valdosta.  
 
UWF enters with an 11-8 record overall and 6-3 mark in GSC play.  The Argos are coming off a 4-3 loss to AUM.  Carlota Verdu is 9-8 and 6-3 in league play placing her 58th nationally, while Aline Midori Da Silva is 12-5 overall and 6-1 in league play for 62nd nationally. Luiza Daud is 11-4 this spring and 6-2 in league play.  In doubles, Daud and Nathalia Mossambani are 8-1 at No. 2 and 4-0 in league play.  
 
The Argos lead the all-time series 21-10 and have won the last 16 in the series.  VSU's last win came in a 5-1 decision on Apr. 18, 2010, in Montgomery, Ala.  That same season, VSU won 9-0 in Valdosta for the last home victory against the Argos.
