Cordeiro Named Gulf South Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week

VALDOSTA, Ga. – Valdosta State junior men's tennis player Pedro Cordeiro was named Gulf South Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week, the conference office announced Wednesday.  This is the first weekly honor for Cordeiro and the third-straight weekly honor for VSU this season.
 
Cordeiro, a native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, helped then-No. 6 Valdosta State secure a decisive 4-0 upset win over top-ranked Saint Leo. The junior recorded the clinching point from court six as he defeated Henrique Bertoli (6-2, 7-5). He and his teammate, junior Christian Wedel, helped the Blazers earn the doubles point as the tandem bested Saint Leo's duo of Bertoli and Martin Soukal (6-2) on court three. This spring, Cordeiro is 7-2 in singles and 4-0 in the GSC, while he is 6-1 with Wedel at the No. 3 doubles position and 1-1 in league play.

The Blazers moved up to No. 3 nationally this week after the win over Saint Leo.  The Lions remain at the top spot, followed by Indianapolis, VSU, Barry and West Florida rounds out the top five.  Lee, who VSU is playing at this very minute in Cleveland, Tenn., is seventh, while West Alabama is 11th and Auburn Montgomery is 23rd among GSC teams in the top 25. 
 
Blazer junior Luca Mack is No. 3 nationally in singles this week with a 15-1 record and a perfect 7-0 mark this spring at the top spot in the lineup.  He also is 4-0 in GSC play in singles this spring.  Wedel moved into the singles rankings for the first time this season at 71st as he is 9-2 this year and 8-1 this spring, also with a 4-0 record in conference play.  In doubles, Mack and junior Rodrigo Carvalho moved up from 42nd to 34th this week as they are 8-1 this spring in doubles at the top spot in the lineup and 4-0 in league play.
