Blazers Head to West Georgia for GSC Super Tuesday Basketball Game

VALDOSTA, Ga.- The Valdosta State men's basketball team will travel to West Georgia in a Gulf South Conference Tournament "Super Tuesday" matchup at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 28.

The game also will be broadcast on 94.3 WJEM FM in Valdosta and online at foxsportsvaldosta.com with Spencer Van Horn having the call.

The Blazers enter the postseason with a 18-12 record overall and went 14-10 in Gulf South Conference play this year. VSU fell to West Alabama on Thursday, 82-72, and dropped a 93-81 decision to Alabama Huntsville on Saturday. Click here for the GSC Men's Basketball Championship Page. 

The Blazers enter the tournament first in offensive scoring in the GSC, averaging 86.3 points per game for 11th nationally. VSU is also first in team field goal percentage in the conference, shooting 48.8 percent for 23rd nationally. Valdosta State is second in three-point field goal percentage in the GSC, shooting 37.8 on the year. VSU is third in the GSC in turnover margin at a 3.13 clip for 28th nationally.  

Individually, Owens is 12th in the GSC in scoring, averaging 15.1 points per game while also being second in assists per game at a 6.3 clip for 12th nationally. Owens currently sits at 188 assists and was recently crowned with the school record for assists in a season, passing Herman Burge's mark of 183 in 2006-07. He is also fifth in the GSC in steals per game with 1.7 a game while Hamilton is sixth with 1.7 a clip. Head Coach Mike Helfer is in his 18th season at the helm of the Blazers and is 349-174 at VSU, while he is in his 26th season of coaching overall and is 535-257 all-time. 

West Georgia enters the week winners of six of its last ten and is under the direction of head coach Dave Moore, who is in his fifth year as the head coach of the program. Moore is 73-60 at West Georgia and is 7-6 against VSU. Michael Zabetakis leads the Wolves in scoring and is second in the conference, averaging 19.4 points per game while Zawdie Jackson averages 15 points per game and is fifth in the conference in assists per game, averaging 4. Jalen Sasser leads the team in rebounds at 5.8 a game as well as blocks at 0.9 per game.  

West Georgia finished the regular season 18-8 overall and 17-7 in conference play. The Blazers fell in both meetings this season against UWG, losing 88-76 in Valdosta, on Dec. 1. The Blazers then came up short in a second half comeback against the Wolves on Jan. 28, 93-88. The Blazers have won 16 of the last 30 matchups with the Wolves and are 6-7 when playing at West Georgia.
