The No. 8 Valdosta State Softball team split a doubleheader with Delta State on the road Saturday evening. In the first pair of games in a Gulf South Conference three game series, the Blazers defeated the Statesmen in the opener, 10-2, while Delta State took the second game, 9-4.
Game 1: #8 Valdosta State 10, Delta State 2 (6 Innings)
In the first game of the evening, the Blazers took an early lead in the top of the first behind a base hit and a wild pitch, setting up an RBI groundout by sophomore
Abby Sulte to put VSU on the board first, 1-0. The Blazer bats struck again in the top of the second as junior
Taylor Macera opened the inning with a deep shot to left to put VSU up 2-0. Valdosta State continued the inning by getting two runners on base thanks to a pair of walks, setting up a three-run bomb by junior
Morgan Hill to give the Blazers a 5-0 edge.
The Blazers added another homer in the top of the third courtesy of senior
Taylor Lewis to increase the VSU lead to 6-0. Delta State answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third behind a couple of base hits and stolen bases to cut the Blazer lead to 6-2.
The Blazer bats remained hot in the top of the fifth as Macera blasted her second homer of the day to put Valdosta State up 7-2. VSU then loaded the bases behind three consecutive walks as junior
Kayla Tosone stole home to give the Blazers an 8-2 cushion. Valdosta State finished the game at the plate in the top of the sixth in explosive fashion as a Blazer walk set up Lewis' second deep shot of the day, giving VSU a 10-2 lead. After the Blazer defense held the Statesmen to no runs in the bottom of the sixth, the run rule went into effect, giving VSU the 10-2 game one victory.
Senior
Samantha Richards was on the mound for the Blazers and recorded her eighth win of the season to improve to 8-1. She recorded her eighth complete game with eight strikeouts, four walks and allowed four hits. At the plate, Macera was two for four with two home runs and three RBI, earning Guardian Bank Player of the Game honors.
Game 2: Delta State 9, #8 Valdosta State 4
In the nightcap game, Delta State got out to an early lead in the Bottom of the first inning behind a couple of base hits and a wild pitch, going up 1-0. The Blazers answered back a couple of innings later in the top of the third as a single from freshman
Jasmin Stewart and a homer from Hill gave VSU the 2-1 lead.
The Blazer lead did not last long as Delta State answered right back in the bottom of the third behind a string of four hits, scoring three runs to give the Statesmen a 4-2 edge. The Blazers struck back in the top of the fifth behind a pair of walks and a RBI single from Sulte to score one, 4-3. Lewis then hit a deep RBI double to score another, tying the game up at 4-4.
The Statesmen went on to hit a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth to go up 8-4. Delta State then tacked on another in the bottom of the sixth behind a double and single to go up 9-4. Despite a hard-fought effort, VSU was unable to come back in the top of the seventh as Delta took game two of the series, 9-4.
Four Blazer pitchers combined for nine runs on 17 hits with nine errors, three walks and six strikeouts while junior pitcher
Taylor Barrett was credited with the loss. Hill recorded one hit for one home run and two RBI to earn Guardian Bank Player of the Game honors.
