INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Coming off earning a share of the program's tenth Gulf South Conference title, the Valdosta State football team learned Sunday evening it is the No. 3-seed in the NCAA Division II Football Championship and will host Limestone (S.C.) on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium.
Benedict (S.C.) earned the top-seed for Super Region Two and the first round "bye". Benedict went 11-0 and won the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title. Co-GSC champion Delta State (9-1) earned the No. 2-seed and will host West Florida (8-3) and No. 4-seed and South Atlantic Conference champion Lenoir-Rhyne (10-1) hosts Shepherd (W.Va.) who happens to be in Super Region 1, but due to the proximity of the two schools, the NCAA has the ability to mix the regions for travel purposes. Shepherd went 9-2 this season and 5-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC).
The Saints of Limestone University, located in Gaffney, S.C., went 8-3 overall and 8-1 in the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) this season. Limestone also lost to SAC-member Lenoir-Rhyne 31-28 in overtime earlier this season. The Blazers and the Saints have never met on the gridiron.
VSU, who went 10-1 overall and 7-1 in GSC play this season has won five-straight games and posted a 58-28 victory Saturday evening over rival West Georgia in the final Peach Basket Game. The Blazers qualify for the NCAA postseason for the 19
th time in program history and are 29-14 (.674). The Blazers have played in six national championship games in program history, with titles in 2004, 2007, 2012 and 2018. Northwest Missouri State leads the way with 53, followed by Grand Valley State with 37.
