Early Lead Not Enough as Blazers Fall 2-1 at Mississippi College

CLINTON, Miss. – The Valdosta State women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision at Mississippi College Sunday afternoon, snapping its three-match winning streak.  The Blazers fell to 6-3-3 on the year and 4-3-1 in Gulf South Conference play, while Mississippi College improved to 6-2-1 and 5-2 in league play.

The Blazers, who had never held a lead in a match in series history entered 0-7-1 all-time, saw senior Ana Moleka score her team-leading seventh goal of the season with an assist from junior Molly Wooldridge for the first goal of the match, just 12:10 into the contest.

The Choctaws leveled the match in the 31st minute as Irene Lores scored her first goal of the season off an assist for Erin Hederman as the match was tied 1-1 at the break.  VSU had four shots in the first half, while MC had ten shots in the opening stanza.  VSU sophomore goalkeeper Claire Timberlake had five saves for the first 45 minutes, while MC's Jessi Carro had three saves.

MC's Margherita Gibuliato scored her fourth goal of the season just 3:14 into the second half which turned out to be the game winner.  However, the Blazers would not go away quietly as they fired eight shots with three on goal for the second half looking for the equalizer.

VSU came close on multiple occasions to score the equalizer, as the Blazers hit the post on a pair of shots and Carro came up with two saves in the second half to preserve the 2-1 victory for the Choctaws.   Timberlake finished with six saves for the Blazers, while senior Taylor Morris had a team-high three shots for the Blazers.

The Blazers continue on the road next week as they travel to Lee for a 7 p.m. match on Friday, Oct. 13, followed by a 1 p.m. first kick on Sunday, Oct. 15 at Shorter.  The Blazers then return home for Senior Weekend, hosting Spring Hill College on Oct. 20 at 7 p.m., and West Florida on Oct. 22 at 1 p.m. for Senior Day.
