Blazers Fall to Wolves in Halloween Night Matchup

VALDOSTA, Ga.- The Valdosta State volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (22-25, 21-25, 23-25) loss to West Georgia at The Complex on Tuesday evening.
 
Following the loss, VSU fell to 15-12 with a 7-5 mark in the Gulf South Conference while UWG improved to 12-12 overall and 6-6 in conference play. The 2023-23 Red Clay Rivalry Series now sits at a score of 3.0-1.0 in favor of the Wolves after both teams scored 0.5 points due to a split in the two volleyball matchups.

First Set:
In the first set of the match, the Wolves raced out to a quick 9-3 lead to kick off the frame. The Blazers responded with a quick 3-0 run before the Wolves struck back with four-straight points to go up by seven, 13-6. In a flash, VSU fought back on a huge 8-1 run to tie the set up at 14-14. VSU and UWG traded six total points back and forth until the set remained tied at 17-17. West Georgia then edged out Valdosta State down the stretch on a 5-2 run to snatch the lead back at 22-19. The Blazers continued to fight, bringing the set within one at 23-22 before the Wolves scored two-straight points to take set one, 25-22.
 
Second Set:
At the beginning of the second set, the Blazers and Wolves fought back and forth, with neither team letting up until the set was tied at 8-8. VSU jumped out to a narrow 10-8 lead before UWG snapped back with a 5-1 run to take a 13-11 lead. However, Valdosta State battled back on a 7-2 rally to go up by three at 18-15. West Georgia ended up shifting the momentum by scoring seven unanswered points to take back the lead, 22-18. The Blazers brought it back within two at 23-21 before the Wolves closed out the set on a 2-0 run, 25-21.
 
Third Set:
Both teams continued to battle at the start of the third set until the Blazers inched ahead 11-8 following the early set skirmish. The Wolves responded with a 6-1 run to go up by two, 14-12. VSU scored two-straight points to tie the set up before both teams traded 10 total points back and forth until the frame remained knotted up at 19-19. Both teams continued to not let up until the set became tied up again at 23-23. Much like the previous two sets, the Wolves closed out the set on two-straight points to take the set, 25-23, and the match, 3-0.
 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Valdosta State hit .098 for the match with 36 kills and 21 errors on 153 swings while West Georgia hit .194 on 40 kills and 13 miscues in 139 attempts.
  • Junior Mackenzie Murray led the Blazers kills with 10 while junior Christina Pettigrew tacked on six.
  • Junior Jojo Smith moved up to number 13 all-time in VSU kills with 861 career kills.
  • Junior Audrey Bennett had 30 assists in the match, moving her into the top ten all-time assists in VSU history at number 10 with 1064 career assists.
  • Junior Kaia Baker led the match in digs with 13 while Bennett added a season-high 12.
  • The Wolves outscored the Blazers in blocks, 8-3, as UWG's Taylor Allen led the match with four.
  • Coming off the bench, sophomore Ava Young tallied four kills and two blocks with one rejection in the third set, making her presence felt late in the match.
  • Zoe LaBreche led the Wolves in kills with 13 while Taylor Allen tallied nine.
