Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Blazers Silence Bulldogs with 2-0 Shutout Sunday Afternoon

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State women's soccer team posted its second clean sheet of the season with a 2-0 victory over visiting Union Sunday afternoon at the VSU Soccer Complex.

The Blazers improved to 5-2-3 overall and 3-2-1 in Gulf South Conference play with the win as sophomore Hunter Wallace scored her second goal and second game winner in as many games for the Blazers.  Wallce finished Sunday's game with three shots on target and the first goal in the 43rd minute.  For the week, Wallace had five shots – all on frame and two goals in 95 minutes of action and two game winners.  She scored the winning goal in a 2-1, come-from-behind victory over Christian Brothers on Friday evening in the 79th minute.

VSU improved to 7-2-2 all-time against Union and posted its fifth shutout in the series.  Blazer sophomore goalkeeper Claire Timberlake posted her first shutout of the season and of her career with two saves on three shots faced in the match.  She improved to 2-0-1 on the year.

Union fell to 3-5-1 overall and 2-3 in GSC play as it had three shots for the match and two on target from Hannah Patterson and Ines Gama.  Goalkeeper Rylee Iorio was busy throughout as she had two goals allowed and recorded 12 saves.

VSU had great looks throughout the match as it registered 20 shots and 15 on frame.  Junior Victoria Bahr led the way with six shots and four on goal, while senior Arianna Colon scored her second career goal, just 1:02 after Wallace's game winner.

The 1:02 timeframe between goals is one of the shortest differences between VSU goals in program history and the shortest of the season.  The Blazers had numerous good looks early and throughout the whole match as Iorio was up to the task for much of the first half.  Wallace found the back of the net for the breakthrough goal on a shot to the left corner for a 1-0 lead at the 42:19 mark.  Just 62 seconds later, Colon scored off a cross from junior Molly Wooldridge over Iorio's head for a 2-0 lead at the 43:21 mark.  It was Wooldridge's second assist of the season.

Heading into halftime, VSU held a commanding 10-1 lead in shots and 9-1 in shots on goal for the first stanza.  Wooldridge also had a good look on a header just three seconds before the end of the half and the seventh save by Iorio for the half.

The onslaught of shots continued for the Blazers in the second half with an additional ten shots and six on target for the second half, but Iorio was up to the challenge, once again.  Timberlake had one save in the second half for the Blazers.

VSU finished its four-match home stand with a 3-1 record and now heads back on the road for two-straight weeks, beginning with a pair of key GSC contests next weekend in Mississippi.  The Blazers and Delta State are set for a 2 p.m. ET kick on Friday, Oct. 6, followed by a 2 p.m. ET match on Sunday, Oct. 8 at Mississippi College.  After that, VSU travels to Lee and Shorter, and then will return home to conclude the regular season home slate with Spring Hill College on Oct. 20 and West Florida on Oct. 22.
