Aleisha Curry and junior men's basketball standout
Jay Rucker were named Steel's Jewelry Blazer Athletes of the Week. This is Rucker's second weekly honor of the season and the first for Curry.
Curry, a native of Lehigh Acres, Fla., averaged 11.0 points and 3.5 rebounds in two games last week. She went 7 of 10 from the field and 8 of 9 from the line, while recording two assists, two blocks and one steal. Curry had a season-high 14 points in 20 minutes of action at Shorter on Jan. 12, going 4 of 4 from the field and 6 of 7 from the line, while pulling down six rebounds. It was her fourth game of double-digit scoring this season and a season-high in rebounding.
For the season Curry is 35 of 56 from the field in 15 games with one start. She is 20 of 26 form the line and is averaging 6.0 points per game and 2.9 rebounds per contest. She has a team-high six blocks for the season.
Rucker, a native of Atlanta, Ga., also had a big week, going 11 of 15 from the field to lead the team at a .733 clip, while he was 1 of 2 from distance and made three free throws. Rucker had eight rebounds with three steals and one block. Rucker went 7 of 11 from the field with two free throws, four rebounds and two steals for 16 points at Lee on Jan. 14.
The Blazers and Lady Blazers host Delta State Saturday afternoon beginning with the women's game at 2 p.m., followed by the men's game at approximately 4 p.m.
