VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State women's soccer team continues at home this week with two matches, while the volleyball and football teams play are on the road.
Women's Soccer
The Blazer women's soccer team (3-4-1, 2-3 GSC) is scheduled to host Mississippi College and Delta State, beginning with a 7 p.m. match Friday evening at the VSU Soccer Complex against the Choctaws, followed by a 1 p.m. kick with Delta on Sunday afternoon.
VSU is coming off a 1-1 week with an 8-0 win over Shorter and a 5-1 loss to No. 13 Lee. Blazer sophomore
Molly Wooldridge tallied her first career hat trick with three goals against Shorter as VSU fired 34 shots in the match for second all-time in shots and the eight goals scored also marked the second-most goals in a match in school history. Landon Carter each played 45 minutes in the combined shutout. On Sunday, VSU sophomore
Kaley Mincy scored an equalizing goal in the first half, but the Lady Flames got a late penalty kick in the first stanza for a 2-1 lead at half. Lee then added three more goals in the second half for the 5-1 victory.
Mississippi College enters with a 7-2 record overall and a 4-1 mark in the GSC as the Choctaws have won three-straight matches, including an 8-0 win over Shorter, 5-2 over Alabama Huntsville and 3-0 over West Alabama. MC's Erin Hederman leads the team with nine goals and three assists for 21 points. She has 25 shots (.360) and 18 on target (.720) with three game winners this season. Beatrice Curry is second with seven goals and three assists for 17 points. She has fired 23 shots (.304) and 16 on frame (.696) with one game winner. Avery Hederman leads the team with eight assists on the year.
In goal, three different Choctaws have played with Sara Maleski starting six contests with a 5-1-0 record and four shutouts. She has a 1.10 goals against average with 11 saves in 488:54 minutes. Anna Wes Driskell has played in four matches with a 2-1 record and one shutout for a 1.19 goals against average with ten saves.
MC has recorded 31 goals and allowed 12 this season, while it has 166 shots (.187) with 103 on goal for a .620 clip. Conversely, teams have 77 shots (.156) with 33 on target (.429). MC has 28 assists for the season and is 2 of 2 in penalty kicks.
Nationally speaking, MC is second nationally in assists per game at a 2.89 clip, while it is third in points per game 9.78, fourth in scoring offense (3.44), second in shots on goal per game (11.44), third in total assists (26), fourth in total goals (31) and fourth in total points (88). Individually, E. Hederman is ninth in goals scored (9), while she is eighth in points (21), while teammate A. Hederman is seventh nationally in total assists (8) to lead the league.
The Choctaws lead the all-time series 6-0-1 and have won six-straight since an opening 1-1 tie in Valdosta in 2014. Last season, MC won 4-1 in Clinton, Miss., while the Choctaws won a 1-0 heartbreaker in Valdosta in double overtime in 2019.
Delta State enters with a 6-5 record overall and 3-3 in GSC play as it is coming off a 2-1 loss to Alabama Huntsville last Sunday. The Lady Statesmen will travel to West Georgia on Friday, before coming to VSU Sunday.
The Lady Statesmen are led by Jae'lasha Julien who leads the team with three goals and two assists for eight points. Ella McQueen is second in scoring with six points on three goals and she leads the team with 17 shots (.176) and nine on target (.529) with two game winners. In goal, Bailey Daugherty leads the team with a 6-5 record and a 0.95 goals against average with 25 saves. She has four shutouts and one combined shutout on the year. st nationally in shutouts (4).
VSU leads the series with Delta State 9-0-1 and has won seven-straight, with five of them coming by the score of 1-0. VSU is 4-0 all-time at home against DSU and has outscored the Lady Statesmen 15-2 in the ten meetings so far.
Following the two matches this week, VSU returns to the road for four matches over the next two weeks, before returning home to host Montevallo (Oct. 21) and Auburn Montgomery (Oct. 23) to close out the regular season.
Volleyball
Coming off a 3-0 sweep over Christian Brothers on Sept. 24, the Valdosta State volleyball team looks to keep the momentum going at Lee on Sept. 30 at 7 p.m., and at Shorter on Oct. 1 at 2 p.m.
The Blazers enter the week with a 7-10 record and a 1-3 mark in league action while sitting ninth in the Gulf South Conference. Lee enters the weekend 11
th in the GSC, and has an overall record of 2-13 and a 0-4 mark in conference play, while Shorter enters the week sixth in the GSC with a 7-9 record and a 2-2 mark in the GSC. The Hawks will host West Georgia on Sept. 30, before welcoming the Blazers to Rome, Ga.
VSU is hitting .160 on the year and has recorded 664 kills, 132 aces, 934 digs and 131 blocks. The team currently leads the league in blocks per set (2.26) and total blocks.
Sophomore
Lyara Rosario leads the conference in service aces (40), good for second nationally, and aces per set (0.69). Sophomore
Christina Pettigrew has a league-high 66 blocks at the net to lead the team while graduate
Mallory Roney leads the team with 153 kills. Sophomore
Jojo Smith has 150 kills on the year along with 114 digs while Rosario has a team-high 282.
The match with Lee marks the 16
th meeting between the two teams while VSU has a slight advantage over the Flames at 8-7. The Blazers fell 3-1 in Cleveland, Tenn., last season and won 3-2 on 10/8/21 in Valdosta.
The Flames are hitting .122 on the year and have recorded 546 kills, 59 aces, 669 digs and 70 blocks. Abby Stroh has a team-high 141 kills on the year while Kamryn Halpin has a team-high 137 digs on defense and Scottie Cook leads the team with 27 blocks.
The match against Shorter marks the 18
th meeting between the two teams with the Hawks having a 10-7 advantage. VSU is 3-6 in Rome and 4-4 in Valdosta.
The team is hitting .167 on the year and has recorded 657 kills, 109 service aces, 886 digs and 110 blocks. Lacee Glover leads the team in kills with 130, while Madison Sprosty has a team-high 226 digs and Carrington Terrell has a team-high 56 blocks.
Following the pair of road matches, VSU will host the Flames inside the Complex on Oct. 4 at 6 p.m., and then will travel to Mississippi College (Oct. 7) and West Alabama (Oct. 8).
