VALDOSTA, Ga. – After another outstanding season, the Valdosta State men's tennis team finished 12
th in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, while sophomore
Luca Mack finished seventh in singles and he and sophomore
Rodrigo Carvalho led the rankings in doubles.
The Blazers finished 14-7 on the year and 8-1 in Gulf South Conference play, qualifying for their 27
th NCAA postseason and now are 52-25 all-time in the field with national titles in 2006 and 2011, along with three runner-up finishes. This season marked the eighth-straight year VSU qualified for the NCAA postseason, while the 52 victories are fifth-most in NCAA Division II.
VSU finished runner-up in both the Gulf South Conference regular season and GSC Championship this season as the Blazers have won a GSC-record 14 conference titles in program history.
Mack, a native of Emmendingen, Germany, went 20-5 against Division II competition in singles this year and was 15-5 in the spring, while going 7-2 in league play as he earned first team all-conference honors. Carvalho, who finished ranked 32
nd in singles went 15-5 for the year and 15-4 this spring as he also went 7-2 in conference play. Carvalho, a native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, also earned first team all-league honors this season.
The duo is ranked No. 1 nationally at 16-8 this year and went 10-8 this spring, while finishing 5-2 in league play. The tandem reached the championship match of the ITA Cup in the Fall, losing to Columbus State duo of Tomaso Schold and Pietro Martinetti, 7-5, 2-6, 1-6.
Freshman
Lamar Bartley, a London, England, native, earned second team all-league honors this season, finished 56
th in singles with a 10-5 record for the year and was 11-6 in the spring, going 6-2 in league play. Sophomore
Christian Wedel, who didn't finish in the ITA final ranking in singles, earned first team all-conference honors and was a team-best 16-4 in the spring, while going 9-0 in GSC play. Wedel also earned first team all-league accolades last season.
With all of these players returning for next season, the Blazers are in great position to contend for another GSC title and NCAA postseason bid.
