MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The No. 6 Valdosta State men's tennis team posted a 7-0 victory at Montevallo Friday afternoon, while the No. 54 women's team dropped a 5-2 decision.
The men's team improved to 11-4 overall and 7-1 in Gulf South Conference play following the victory as the team swept the doubles matches. Top-ranked duo of sophomores
Luca Mack and
Rodrigo Carvalho won 6-3, while sophomore duo of
Christian Wedel and
Cameron Henricy Trigolos won at No. 3, 7-6 winning the tiebreaker, 7-0.
In singles, VSU moved out to a 2-0 lead as Carvalho, ranked No. 60 nationally, won at No. 3, 6-2, 6-0 over Gavin Salton, while Mack, ranked No. 8 nationally, won 6-4, 6-1 at the top spot. Freshman
Lamar Bartley clinched the victory with a win at No. 2, downing Phillippe Zehender, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3). Wedel won at No. 4, 6-3, 6-3, while junior
Christian Felline won at No. 5, 6-2, 6-2 and Henricy Trigolos won at No. 6 in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 10-4.
On the women's side, VSU fell to 7-10 on the year and 6-3 in GSC play. The Falcons improved to 8-6 overall and 5-2 in league play. UM won the doubles point with wins at Nos. 1 and 2, but freshman duo of
Adriana Barrio and
Andrea Barrio won 6-4 at No. 3.
Heading to singles, UM won at No. 3 for a 2-0 lead as Emily Hafner downed freshman
Elisa Beau, 6-4, 6-2, but Blazer freshman
Magda Tuells Bonet won at No. 1, 6-2, 6-3, over Mireia Turro for a 2-1 deficit. VSU tied the match at two as
Adriana Barrio won at No. 5, 6-3, 6-2, over Isabelle Barfoot. UM regained the lead, with a win at No. 2 as Cyba Ozzor outlasted freshman
Anastasiia Vorobiova, 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (7-5) in three sets for a 3-2 lead. The Falcons then clinched the match with a win at No. 4 as Eva Dirr defeated sophomore
Rachelle Starreveld, 6-4, 6-2, and Lieselott Hartlohner won at No. 6, 6-1, 6-4 over
Andrea Barrio for the 5-2 score.
