Blazer Women’s Tennis Wins Two Saturday; Clinch Inaugural Red Clay Rivalry Series Victory

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Valdosta State women's tennis team won two Gulf South Conference matches at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex Saturday.  VSU defeated West Georgia, 4-0, and downed Mississippi College, 4-3.

VSU improved to 7-8 on the year and 6-1 in GSC play as the win over West Georgia was part of the Red Clay Rivalry Series as VSU improved to 6-2 this year in the series between the two schools.  The win also locked up VSU winning the inaugural season of the Red Clay Rivalry Series as there are only three sports remaining including the baseball and softball series', scheduled for Apr. 9-10 in Carrollton, Ga., and the men's golf GSC Championship, slated for Apr. 15-16 in Mobile, Ala.

After a rain delay, the Blazers came out with wins at Nos. 1 and 3 in doubles as sophomore Julia Saving and senior Hera Brynjarsdottir Bjork won 6-3 at No. 1, while freshmen Adriana and Andrea Barrio won at No. 3, 6-0.

VSU pushed the lead to 2-0 as Adriana Barrio won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4, while freshman Elisa Beau won at No. 2, 6-2, 6-1, and freshman Magda Tuells Bonet, ranked No. 70 nationally, won 6-1, 6-3, at No. 1 for the 4-0 victory.

Due to the delay from the rain and having to play Mississippi College Saturday afternoon, the match was stopped after VSU had won the four team points.

With very little rest time following the West Georgia match, the Blazers were right back out there.  MC won the doubles point with wins at Nos. 1 and 3 to clinch the doubles point.  VSU responded nicely with four-straight singles victories to win the match.

The rally began with Adriana Barrio winning in straight-sets 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4, while Beau won 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 at No. 2 for a 2-1 lead.  Andrea Barrio won at No. 5, 6-1, 6-2 and Tuells Bonet won at the top spot, 6-4, 2-6, 7-5 over Ely Alas.  MC had wins at Nos.  3 and 6 to pull within 4-3.

VSU is scheduled to conclude the weekend trip with No. 11 West Alabama on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. ET.  Check back with vstateblazers.com for complete recaps and stats of the match.
