No. 56 Blazer Women’s Tennis Closes Regular Season with No. 19 Auburn Montgomery

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The No. 56 Valdosta State women's tennis team concludes the 2022 regular season slate Wednesday at 3 p.m. versus No. 19 Auburn Montgomery at the VSU Tennis Courts.  
 
The Blazers enter with a 7-12 record overall and a 6-3 mark in the Gulf South Conference, while AUM is 14-6 overall and 8-1 in Gulf South Conference play.  The Warhawks have locked up the No. 2-seed in the upcoming Gulf South Conference Championship, while VSU either will be the No. 4 or No. 5-seed, as Montevallo and VSU each are 6-3. Montevallo finishes at home with West Alabama on Tuesday.  
 
UM won the regular season meeting against VSU, 5-2, on Apr. 8, therefore if the teams finish with the same record UM will be the No. 4-seed and VSU will be the No. 5-seed.  They will face each other in the first round of the GSC Championship on Apr. 28, 2022, at Lagoon Park and O'Connor Tennis Center in Montgomery, Ala.
 
VSU has dropped its last four matches, but has fought valiantly in each.  Last week, VSU dropped a 5-2 decision at No. 4 Columbus State and then lost a 6-1 decision to No. 13 Flagler.  For the week, sophomore Rachelle Starreveld went 2-0 in singles at the No. 6 spot, winning 6-1, 6-1 against Flagler's Addison S. Breunich and 4-6, 6-2, 10-8 over CSU's Agostina Bigotti.  Freshman Adriana Barrio went 1-1 in singles at No. 5 for the Blazers, defeating CSU's Luciana Galves, 6-3, 6-4, and went 1-1 in doubles with her sister freshman Andrea Barrio, winning 6-4 at No. 3 against Flagler. 
 
AUM enters led by No. 19-ranked Estefania Garcia who is 19-4 this year against Division II competition and is 15-4 this spring, while going 7-2 in league play at the No. 2 spot in the lineup.  Sofia Navarro is 12-8 this spring and 19-10 overall this year and is 57th nationally, whie she is 6-3 in league play at the top spot in the lineup.  Ane Ibarra is 13-4 this spring and 7-1 in league play at Nos. 5 and 6, while Nahia Izco is 11-7 this spring and 5-4 in league play.  In doubles, Garcia/Navarro are 19th nationally with a 17-4 record this year and a 15-4 mark this spring while the duo is 8-1 in league play at the top spot in the lineup.  Isabella Pinto and Alba De La Torre are 10-5 this spring and 5-2 in league play, mainly at the No. 3-spot.  
 
AUM leads the series 6-1 since 2011, and has won the last two in the series, including in both the regular season (5-2) and conference tournament (4-2) in 2021.  VSU's lone victory came in 2020, with a 4-3 win on Mar. 3, in Valdosta.
 
This season, freshman Natalie Kohoutkova is 52nd nationally and 9-6 for the year against D2 opponents, while freshman Magda Tuells Bonet is 60th nationally and 12-9 on the year.  She is 9-9 this spring and 7-2 in GSC play.  Adriana Barrio is 13-6 this spring and 8-1 in GSC play to lead the team.  In doubles, freshman Elisa Beu and Tuells Bonet are 5-4 this spring and 3-2 in league play, while the Barrio sisters are 4-4 this spring and 3-2 in league play.
