No. 54 Blazer Women’s Tennis Plays at No. 4 Columbus State Wednesday; Hosts No. 17 Flagler Friday

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The No. 54 Valdosta State women's tennis team has two ranked opponents this week as it travels to No. 4 Columbus State for a 3 p.m., match Wednesday, before returning home to host No. 17 Flagler on Friday at 2 p.m. at the VSU Tennis Courts.
 
The Blazers enter with a 7-10 record overall and a 6-3 mark in Gulf South Conference play, following a 5-2 loss at Montevallo last Friday.  In the loss, freshman Adriana Barrio won at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 6-2 and freshman Magda Tuells Bonet won at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-3.  Adriana Barrio also won in doubles with her sister, Andrea, 6-4, but UM clinched the doubles point.
 
Columbus State enters with a 13-4 record overall and a 4-0 mark in the Peach Belt Conference.  The Cougars have won nine-straight matches and are coming off a 7-0 victory at Lander on Saturday.  This season, the Cougars are led by Neila Trklja, who is No. 9 nationally in singles with a 9-4 record against D2 competition and an 11-5 mark this spring.  Valentina Abrile is 11-5 this spring and 3-0 in PBC play, while Luciana Galves is 11-4 and Yelena Labat is 11-5.  Mariana Ramirez is 10-6 this spring.  

In doubles, Abrile/Ramirez are 12-3 this spring and 13-4 overall for 17th nationally, while Trklja and Agostina Bigotti are 12-4 at the No. 2 spot in the lineup and have won nine-straight matches. 
 
CSU has won the last seven matches in the series, dating back to Mar. 5, 2013.  The Cougars won 6-1 in Valdosta on Mar. 31, 2021, in the last meeting.  CSU has won the last three matches 6-1, 6-1, and 8-1, while winning the match before those, 5-3 on Mar. 9, 2016, in Columbus.
 
Flagler enters the week with a 9-5 record overall and a 2-0 mark in the PBC.  The Saints will play at Georgia College on Wednesday, before heading to Valdosta for Friday's match.  This season, Flagler is led by Luisa Hrda who is 21-6 this season and 9-3 in the spring for fifth nationally in singles.  Anika Nissen is 16-5 overall and 11-1 this spring and has won 11-straight matches, while Allesandra Traub is 12-7 this year and 8-4 in the spring.  In doubles, Hrda and Eden Schlagenhauf are fifth nationally at 11-2 overall and 10-1 this spring.  Individually, Hrda is 17-5 in doubles this year, while Schlagenhauf is 18-6.  
 
The Saints won the only meeting between the two teams on Feb. 21, 2021, in Valdosta with a 7-0 victory. 
 
This season, the Blazers are led by Adriana Barrio at 12-5 this spring and 8-1 in GSC play at Nos. 4-6 positions.  Tuells Bonet is 9-7 in singles this spring and 7-2 in GSC play.  In doubles, Tuells Bonet and freshman Elisa Beau are 5-3 and 3-2 in league play.  Tuells Bonet is 9-6 individually in doubles and 5-4 in league play.  
 
Following the matches this week, VSU continues at home for its regular season finale on Apr. 20 at 3 p.m. against Auburn Montgomery at the VSU Tennis Courts.
