VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State men's and women's tennis teams return home to host Lynn on Friday, Mar. 25 at 2 p.m. at the VSU Tennis Courts.
The No. 6 Blazer men's team is 6-4 on the year and 3-1 in Gulf South Conference play, while No. 11 Lynn is a perfect 10-0 on the year and 3-0 in the Sunshine State Conference. Check back with vstateblazers.com for a complete recap and stats following the match.
VSU is coming off two GSC matches in Pensacola, Fla., where it defeated No. 35 Delta State 4-3 and came up just short in a disappointing 4-3 loss at No. 12 West Florida. Against Delta State, the Blazers dropped the doubles point, but rallied in singles, winning four of the six matches. VSU freshman
Lamar Bartley ended up clinching the victory after he dropped the first set, 6-0, but rallied for 6-2, 6-4 victories in the final two sets for the win over DSU's Emile Le Terrier at No. 2.
Against rival West Florida, the Blazers once again dropped the doubles point, but the Blazers won two of three singles matches that went the distance to three sets as sophomore
Christian Wedel won at No. 4 singles (7-6, 2-6, 7-5) and sophomore
Cameron Henricy Trigolos won at No. 6 (4-6, 6-4, 6-4) at No. 6. The loss marked the first regular season Gulf South Conference loss for the Blazers since Mar. 29, 2018, at West Florida. Since then, VSU had won 30-straight GSC matches. No other team but West Florida has beaten VSU in regular season conference play since 2014.
For the spring season, VSU is 16-14 in doubles, while it is 36-23 in singles. Bartley and junior
Christian Felline are 6-4 in doubles at the No. 2 spot, including 2-2 in league play, while sophomores
Rodrigo Carvalho and
Christian Wedel are 3-0 at No. 3 doubles and 2-0 in the GSC to lead the team. The doubles tandem of Carvalho and sophomore
Luca Mack are No. 5 nationally in the latest ITA rankings.
In singles, Wedel is 8-1 on the year and 4-0 in GSC play at the No. 4 position, while Carvalho is 3-1 in league play and 7-3 at the No. 3 spot. Trigolos is 6-3 and 6-2 at the No. 6 position in the spring.
Nationally speaking, sophomore
Luca Mack is 5-5 in singles at the top spot and 1-1 in GSC play, as he is sixth nationally in singles boasting a 12-3 record against D2 competition this season. Carvalho is 63
rd with a 7-4 mark against D2 schools and 7-3 this spring at No. 2. Bartley is No. 72 with a 4-3 record overall and a 5-5 mark this spring at No. 2 singles.
The Fighting Knights have D1 victories this season over Bucknell (4-0) and Army (5-0), while it also defeated Barry 4-3 in the second match of the season. Lynn's Lucca Baptista is 29
th nationally in singles as the only player in the latest ITA polls this week.
Lynn leads the all-time series 10-8, dating back to 1997. The Fighting Knights have won the last two in the series as the teams have split the past four meetings. Lynn won on Mar. 1, 2020, in Valdosta with a 4-3 decision in the last meeting. VSU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in doubles and held a 3-1 lead, before Lynn rallied winning the final three singles matches, including a three-setter in the final match.
On the women's side, the Blazers enter with a 4-7 record overall and a 3-1 mark in the GSC. VSU blanked Delta State, 7-0 and dropped a heartbreaking 4-3 decision at No. 24 West Florida earlier this week. No. 20 Lynn enters with a 9-3 record overall and a 4-2 mark in the SSC.
For the spring dual season, VSU is 34-31 in singles and 17-15 in doubles. Freshman
Adriana Barrio is 8-3 and 4-0 in GSC play at Nos. 5 and 6 singles, while freshman
Magda Tuells Bonet is 6-5 in singles and 4-0 in GSC play at both No. 1 and No. 2. Sophomore
Rachelle Starreveld is 5-4 overall and 3-1 in GSC play, while freshman
Anastasiia Vorobiova also is 5-4 and 3-1 in league play.
Following the matches on Friday, the Blazers return to the road, VSU returns to league play and to Pensacola, Apr. 1-3, facing Christian Brothers, Mississippi College and West Alabama, before trips to Montevallo (Apr. 8) and Columbus State (Apr. 13). VSU concludes the regular season on Apr. 20 at the VSU Tennis Courts versus Auburn Montgomery.
