Blazer Men’s Golf Heads to Saint Leo Invitational

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State men's golf team returns to action Monday and Tuesday at the Saint Leo Invitational on the par 72, 7,173-yard Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club course.  The 17-team field will play 36 holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday.

Last season, the Blazers finished tied for eighth in the tournament with a 54-hole score of 861.  Lynn won the tournament by five strokes over host Saint Leo.  Current Blazer junior Chase Weathers paced the team finishing tied for seventh with a 210 score, including a career-best 67 in the second round. 
 
In another strong field throughout in 2022, Gulf South Conference member Lee leads the five at No. 5 in both Golfstat and the Bushnell/Golfweek Division II Coaches Poll, while Nova Southeastern is ninth in both polls and Saint Leo is 13thin both.  Indianapolis is 37th in Golfstat and 25th in Golfweek completing the teams ranked in both polls.  Tusculum (27/RV), Lynn (32/RV), Valdosta State (42/RV) and Tampa (54/RV) round out teams who are receiving votes in the Golfweek Poll.  
 
The rest of the field includes; Embry-Riddle, Florida Tech, Hillsdale (Mich.) Kentucky Wesleyan, Palm Beach Atlantic, Trevecca Nazarene and Wilmington (Del.), to round out the NCAA Division II institutions.  In addition, Keiser, ranked No. 1 nationally in NAIA, and NCAA Division I Monmouth University complete the field.  
 
The Blazer lineup features graduate student Wesley Hanson at the top spot in the lineup, followed by Weathers at No. 2 and sophomore Ryan Pollman at No. 3.  Sophomore Jackson Cross is fourth and senior Gage Smith is fifth.  Redshirt freshman Trey Tesiero is playing as an individual.  
 
Last week the Blazers struggled a bit with adverse conditions and an unfamiliar course to open the spring season at the Spring Kickoff Intercollegiate in St. Augustine, Fla., at St. Johns Golf Club.  There, the Blazers finished 15th with a 927 score (310-310-307) in the 22-team field.  Hanson led the way with a 231 score on rounds of 74, 75 and 82.  
 
Following the tournament, the Blazers will return home to prepare for the First Federal Savings Southeastern Collegiate, scheduled for Mar. 14-15 at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club in Valdosta.
