MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Valdosta State women's soccer team scored a second half goal from sophomore
Kaley Mincy, but Christian Brothers posted two goals in the first half for a 2-1 victory Sunday afternoon. The Blazers dropped to 3-8-1 overall and 2-7 in Gulf South Conference play, while CBU improved to 8-4-2 and 5-3-2 in league play.
VSU finished with 17 shots and six on frame, while CBU had ten shots and four on target in the match. The Blazers had two saves from sophomore
Emma Pruett, while CBU goalkeeper Chloe Hillyer had five saves. Pruett played the first 61 minutes, while junior
Landon Carter played the final 29 minutes.
Mincy had three shots and one on target for VSU, while freshman
Victoria Bahr finished with five shots and three on frame. Mincy was named the Guardian Bank Blazer Player of the Match. Julia Valentin had four shots and one on frame for CBU with one of the two goals, while Cheyenne Smith also had four shots and two on frame with the other goal for the Lady Bucs.
The Blazers had six good looks early, but were unable to convert as Smith scored the first goal at the 15:46 mark for a 1-0 CBU lead. VSU continued the offensive pressure with a good shot from Bahr and a save from Hillyer at the 23:53 mark. Sophomore
Molly Wooldridge had a good look with a save from Hillyer at the 37:24 mark in the first half, but a few moments later Valentin scored for a 2-0 CBU lead.
In the second half, the Blazers wouldn't give up as Mincy found the back of the net for the second time this season at the 54:38 mark. From there, VSU had three quick shots and Bahr had another good look later in the half, but was unable to get past Hillyer.
VSU continues on the road next week with matches at West Alabama on Friday, Oct. 14, at 6 p.m. ET, followed by a match at 2 p.m. ET on Sunday, Oct. 16. The Blazers then return home to close out the regular season on Oct. 21 and Oct. 23, versus Montevallo and Auburn Montgomery, respectively.
