Blazer Volleyball Completes Sweep Over Alabama Huntsville Friday Night

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State volleyball team completed a 3-0 sweep over the Alabama Huntsville Chargers Friday night inside the Complex. The Blazers won 25-14, 25-16, 25-20 and improved to 9-17 on the year, 3-7 in the Gulf South Conference, and broke a three-game skid while the Chargers fell to 10-14 on the year and 4-6 in league action.  

The Blazers recorded 39 kills, five aces, 12 blocks and 47 digs while hitting .299 for the match. Graduate Mallory Roney, the Guardian Bank Player of the Match, finished the match with 11 kills, a season-high four blocks at the net and a service ace while hitting .526. Sophomore Jojo Smith also recorded 11 kills and had four digs while hitting .269. On defense, senior Olivia Piazza recorded a team-high 15 digs while sophomore Christina Pettigrew had four total blocks in the match along with seven kills, two service aces and a dig.  

For the Chargers, the team hit .009 for the match and recorded 26 kills, four aces, and 43 digs. Kaila Sisk led the offense with six kills while Tatiana Bonilla had 14 digs on defense and Savannah Rutledge had a team-high three service aces.  

Set One (VSU 25, UAH 14)  

VSU's offense wasted no time jumping out to a dominating 9-0 lead to begin the set from kills by Smith, freshman Ava Young and Roney. After a kill by UAH, the Blazers again went on a 7-2 run to push their lead to 16-3. Later in the set, the Chargers were able to get four-straight points to scratch back at 18-8, but a Charger miscue brought the Blazers back to the serving line. VSU reached set point at 24-11 from a kill by Pettigrew and a UAH miscue, but the Chargers kept the set alive with three-straight points to scratch back to 24-14. A final kill by Pettigrew allowed VSU to take set one 25-14.  

Set Two (VSU 25, UAH 16)  

After a 4-1 start from VSU, the Blazers continued to build their lead to 8-4 from a kill by Roney and a Charger miscue. In the middle of the set, VSU went on a 7-0 run from efforts by Murray, Roney and Charger errors to build an 18-8 lead. UAH responded with a 7-1 run to come within six, 18-12, but the Blazers went on a final 6-1 run from a kill and ace by Roney plus Charger miscues to take set two 25-16.  

Set Three (VSU 25, UAH 20)  

A kill by Roney and a Charger miscue allowed VSU to jump out to a 6-2 lead, but UAH was able to bounce back and tie the game at nine. A pair of kills by Murray and a service ace allowed VSU to regain the lead at 12-9, but UAH quickly responded with three-straight points to tie the game again at 13. Following the run, VSU went on a 6-0 run to build a 20-14 lead, but UAH stayed alive and battled back to 23-20 from a kill by Caroline Moyer. A final kill from Murray and a Charger miscue allowed VSU to take set three 25-20, and the match 3-0.  

The Blazers are back in action on Saturday, playing host Montevallo at 1 p.m. inside the Complex. Senior Olivia Piazza will be honored as the lone senior for the Blazers for senior day.
