HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – A goal by host Alabama Huntsville at the 29:24 mark in the first half proved to be the difference in a 1-0 loss for the Valdosta State women's soccer team Sunday afternoon. VSU fell to 3-10-1 overall and 2-9 in Gulf South Conference play, while UAH improved to 4-6-5 overall and 3-4-4 in league play.
UAH's Maialen Mera Torres scored at the 29:24 mark in the first half for her fourth goal of the season. VSU finished with seven shots and four on target for the match, while UAH had 14 shots and four on frame. The Blazers had seven corner kicks for the match. Sophomore
Kaley Mincy was the lone player with multiple shots in the game, finishing with two shots and one on target, while five other Blazers had one shot each. Mincy was named the Guardian Bank Blazer Player of the Match. Sophomore goalkeeper
Emma Pruett finished with the one goal allowed and three saves.
Mera Torres finished with two shots in the contest and the one goal, while Olivia Marlow led the team with three shots. Goalkeeper Adriana Wright had four saves in 90 minutes for the clean sheet.
Both teams put the goalkeepers to work right away with a combined three shots – two by the Blazers and saves within the first five minutes of the contest. VSU finished with six shots in the first half and three on target, while UAH had five shots and two on target with the goal. The Blazers had just one shot on target in the second half, while UAH had nine shots and two on frame.
VSU returns home for the final two matches of the regular season and Senior Weekend, beginning by hosting Montevallo on Friday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m., followed by Senior Day on Sunday, Oct. 23 at 1 p.m. Both matches will be at the VSU Soccer Complex.
