Blazer Soccer Continues Unbeaten Streak with Record-Breaking Win Over Albany State

ALBANY, Ga. – The Blazer women's soccer team recorded a record-breaking win at Albany State 11-0 Wednesday night. VSU recorded 37 shots, with five players recording their first goal in red and black.

The Blazers (2-0) started the scoring campaign early in the first half, with a bottom-corner goal by junior forward Kate Katzman, from an assist by freshman Molly Wooldridge. Wooldridge, this week's Gulf South Conference's (GSC) Freshman Player of the Week, recorded one goal and one assist with two shots on goal.

Kyleigh Reedy was next to put her name on the scoresheet. Reedy scored off a poor clearance from the Golden Rams' goalkeeper to propel the Blazers to a 2-0 lead. Reedy recorded her first goal of the 2021 season.

Wooldridge scored the third goal of the match, marking her second goal as a Blazer. To round out the scoring for the Blazers, freshman forward Ansley Decenzo, freshman forward Malaina Aronson, freshman midfielder Ashley Puentes, this weeks' GSC's Offensive Player of the Week Bailey Hern, and freshman forward Emma Johnson all found the back of the net. Junior forward Lauren Hicks, scored a brace for the Blazers, marking her first brace of the season and brought her career total to 13.

While the Blazers recorded six goals in the first half, meeting the previous record for goals scored in a match, the Golden Rams went into the second half of the game with ten players on the pitch and conceived an own goal off the efforts of Jocelyn Oballe. Albany State fell to 0-3 on the season while VSU holds a 4-0 overall record against ASU.

Katzman, Aronson, Puentes and Emma Johnson all scored their first goals for VSU and for the fall 2021 season, while Hicks also recorded her first goal of the season and 13th goal in her career.

The 11-0 scoreline marks the school record in goals scored in a match. The previous record was set on November 3, 2019, against Union University where the Blazers came on top 6-0.

VSU plays on the road at Georgia College on September 10 at 6 p.m., before finally beginning a four-game homestead starting Sunday, September 12 at 1 p.m. against North Georgia at the VSU Soccer Complex.
