VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State men's and women's tennis teams are scheduled to complete the regular season Friday at 4 p.m. ET in Montgomery, Ala., at Lagoon Park & O'Connor Tennis Center, versus Christian Brothers.
The matches versus Christian Brothers originally were scheduled for earlier in the season in Carrollton, Ga., but were postponed due to inclement weather and rescheduled for April 16.
The No. 4 Blazer men's tennis team enters the regular season finale already having locked up the top seed in the Gulf South Conference Championship, scheduled for Apr. 22-24, also in Montgomery, Ala., at Lagoon Park & O'Connor Tennis Center. The Blazers are 11-1 on the year and a perfect 8-0 in GSC play.
VSU is coming off a pair of wins this past weekend in Pensacola, Fla., downing West Alabama 6-1 and defeating Mississippi College 7-0. VSU senior
Florian Simbozel was named Gulf South Conference Player of the Week for the third time this season, while freshman
Christian Wedel earned GSC Freshman of the Week honors for the second-straight week.
For the season, the Blazers are 55-12 in singles and 42-6 in Gulf South Conference play, while they are 24-12 in doubles and 16-8 in GSC play. Wedel is a perfect 12-0 in singles and 8-0 in conference play at Nos. 1-3. Simbozel is 10-0 in singles at Nos. 1-2 and 7-0 in GSC play. Wedel is No. 22 in the latest ITA rankings, while Simbozel is No. 12. Senior
Yohan Nguyen is 7-2 in singles at the top spot in the lineup and 4-1 in GSC Play, while he is ranked No. 5 in the latest ITA rankings. Freshman
Luca Mack is 7-3 at Nos. 3-4 singles for the Blazers and 6-1 in GSC play.
Simbozel and Nguyen are the top doubles team in the ITA rankings with a 10-1 record overall and a 6-1 mark in the GSC at the top spot. Freshmen tandem of
Edward Etty and Mack are 6-5 in doubles at the Nos. 2-3 spots and 5-2 in GSC play.
Christian Brothers enter the week with a 6-7 record overall and a 1-6 mark in the GSC. CBU is scheduled to face West Alabama on Thursday, before facing VSU Friday. CBU's lone GSC victory came in a 6-1 decision at Shorter on Feb. 21. The Bucs are coming off a 5-2 victory at Bethel (Tenn.) on Sunday. CBU won the doubles point and took four of six singles matches, all in straight-sets. Cory Cox won 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 6 spot in singles.
VSU has won the last nine meetings in the series dating back to 2011. VSU has outscored CBU 52-1 in team scoring as the Bucs dropped a 5-1 decision in Pensacola, Fla., on Apr. 7, 2018.
The Blazer women's tennis team is 5-8 overall and 5-4 in GSC Play. VSU has clinched a spot in the GSC Championship, April 22-24, however, the seeding hasn't been determined as of yet and will become clearer after the matches this weekend.
VSU is coming off a 1-2 weekend in Pensacola, Fla., with a 5-2 loss to No. 6 West Alabama, a 7-0 victory over West Georgia and a heartbreaking 4-3 loss to Mississippi College.
Senior Estee Widdershoven leads the team with an 8-4 record in singles and a 7-2 mark in the GSC at the top spot in the lineup. Freshman
Rachelle Starreveld is 6-5 in singles and 6-2 in league play at both Nos. 2-3. In doubles, sophomore
Eva Rivoal and Widdershoven are 5-4 overall and 4-3 in GSC play at the top spot, while Widdershoven and Starreveld are 2-2 overa and 1-1 in league play also at the top spot.
