PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 4 Valdosta State men's tennis team defeated Mississippi College Monday morning to improve to 11-1 on the year and a perfect 8-0 in Gulf South Conference play. Mississippi College fell to 1-10 overall and 1-5 in league play.
The top-ranked tandem of seniors
Florian Simbozel and
Yohan Nguyen posted a 6-4 victory at the top spot in doubles, while sophomore
Christian Felline and junior
Robert Cizek won 6-1 at No. 2 and freshman tandem of
Luca Mack and
Edward Etty cruised to a 6-0 victory at No. 3.
With the 1-0 lead in the team scoring, the match headed to singles where VSU won all six matches in straight-sets. Simbozel, ranked 12
th in the latest ITA singles rankings, won at the top spot, 6-2, 7-5 over Matias Ballatore. At the No. 2 spot, freshman
Christian Wedel, ranked No. 22 in ITA, won 7-5, 6-4 over Brady McDaniel. Mack won 6-1, 6-4 at No 3, while Felline downed Paolo Scorzoni, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4. At No. 5, freshman
Cameron Henricy Trigolos dropped just one game, winning 6-1, 6-0 over Shane Samyn and Etty posted a 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 6.
The Blazers will conclude the regular season with a neutral site match Friday, Apr. 16, in Montgomery, Ala., versus Christian Brothers at 4 p.m. ET. VSU then will head to the Gulf South Conference Championship, scheduled for Apr. 22-24 also in Montgomery, Ala.
