MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The No. 4 Valdosta State men's tennis team concluded the 2021 regular season with a 7-0 victory over Christian Brothers Friday afternoon at Lagoon Park & O'Connor Tennis Center. VSU finishes the regular season with a 12-1 record and a perfect 9-0 mark in Gulf South Conference play to win the outright GSC regular season title.
VSU opened the match in quick fashion with wins at all three doubles positions as top-ranked tandem of seniors
Yohan Nguyen and
Florian Simbozel downed Paul Chabaud and Antilo Flores, 6-1. Sophomore
Christian Felline and junior
Robert Cizek took care of Andrew Calzacorta and Javier Flores, 6-3, at No. 2 singles and freshman duo of
Luca Mack and
Edward Etty also won by a 6-3 score at No. 3.
The Blazers held the 1-0 lead through doubles and won all six singles matches for the victory. Freshman
Cameron Henricy Trigolos put the Blazers up 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5 over Carlson Bennage and Mack defeated Calzacorta, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 for a 3-0 lead. Felline won at No. 4 over J. Flores 6-3, 6-2 to clinch the match. No. 22
Christian Wedel improved to a perfect 13-0 in singles this season with a 6-1, 6-3 win over A. Flores at the No. 2 spot, while Etty won 7-6, 6-2 at No. 2 and No. 12 Simbozel completed the sweep with a 3-6, 6-1, 10-8 victory at the top spot over Chabaud. Simbozel also finished the regular season undefeated in singles at 11-0.
Christian Brothers fell to 6-9 and 1-8 the GSC. The match marked the fourth time this season VSU has won 7-0 and fifth time not allowing a team point to the opponent. The Blazers will return to Montgomery and Lagoon Park & O'Connor Tennis Complex for the 2021 Gulf South Conference Championship, Apr. 22-24. The Blazers will be the top seed in the championship.
