VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State men's and women's tennis teams open a string of four matches over a six-day period beginning Thursday at 2 p.m. versus Washburn at the VSU Tennis Complex. Following the Washburn matches, VSU returns to league play at Shorter on Friday at 2 p.m., followed by a 10 a.m. match at Lee on Saturday and then a non-conference match at Georgia College on Wednesday, Mar. 17 at 2 p.m.
The No. 15 Blazers are 4-0 on the year and 2-0 in Gulf South Conference play after a 5-2 victory over No. 19 Delta State on Saturday. In the match, VSU took the doubles point with wins at Nos. 1 and 2. In singles, VSU won at the top four spots as two of the four matches went to three sets. VSU senior
Yohan Nguyen won in three sets at the top spot in singles over Emile Le Terrier, 6-4, 6-7 (9-11), 6-3 to clinch the match at 4-1 to that point.

Luca Mack are 2-2 at No. 2 and freshmen
Cameron Henricy Trigolos and
Christian Wedel also are 2-2 at No. 3. In singles, Nguyen is 4-0 at the top spot in the lineup, while Simbozel is 3-0 at No. 2. Wedel also is 4-0 at No. 3. VSU is 17-5 as a team in singles this season, while it is 8-4 in doubles.
Washburn is 4-1 and has won three-straight, including a 5-2 victory at Southeastern Oklahoma State on Feb. 27. The Ichobods play at Northwood (Fla.) on Tuesday and at Flagler on Wednesday before heading to VSU Thursday. Heading into the matches this week, Paul Hasse leads the team in singles play at No. 3 with a 4-0 record, while Raul-Alin Dicu and Miguel Perez are 3-2, respectively, at the top two spots. In doubles, the Ichobods are led by Daniel Bird and Dicu at No. 3 with a 3-0 record.
Shorter is 2-3 overall and 0-3 in GSC play. The Hawks have losses to Christian Brothers (6-1), West Florida (7-0) and Auburn Montgomery (7-0), while they have wins over Piedmont College (6-1) and Gadsden CC (7-0). Last season, SU was 2-4 and 0-4 in league play before the season was cancelled. VSU won last season's meeting 7-0 in Valdosta on Feb. 11. VSU won all three doubles matches and every singles match in straight-sets.
Lee enters with a 5-2 record overall and a 0-1 mark in GSC play. The Flames dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 3 West Florida in the lone league match of the season. Lee has won four-straight matches after going 1-2 in its first three. Leading the way for the Flames this season is Antonio Pons and Bruno Medeiros at the top spot in doubles at 5-2, while Jordi Dasi and Daniel Prata are 5-2 in doubles at No. 3. In singles, Lee is led by Jesus Garcia at the top spot at 5-1. VSU downed Lee last season 5-2 in Valdosta on Mar. 7.
Georgia College sits at 2-2 overall and will play at No. 9 Flagler on Saturday, before hosting the Blazers on Wednesday. GC dropped a 6-1 decision to Auburn Montgomery, who VSU defeated 7-0 and VSU defeated Flagler 5-2, who GC plays on Saturday. VSU defeated Georgia College in Valdosta last season, 4-0.
On the women's side, the Blazers are 1-3 and 1-1 in GSC play after a 4-3 victory on Saturday versus Delta State. In the match versus the Lady Statesmen, VSU won the doubles point with a 6-0 victory at the top spot from senior Estee Widdershoven and freshman
Rachelle Starreveld and a win at No. 2 from junior

Julia Saving, 6-4. DSU tied the match at 1-1 with a win at No. 6, but Starreveld and Widdershoven gave VSU a 3-1 lead. After DSU cut the deficit to 3-2, junior
Hera Bjork Brynjarsdottir won at No. 5, 6-4, 6-4, to clinch the match. The teams decided to play out the rest of match for the 4-3 score.
Widdershoven is 2-2 at the top spot in singles to lead the team and Starreveld is 2-1 at No. 2 singles. Widdershoven and Starreveld are 2-2 in doubles at the top spot. VSU is 5-7 in doubles this season overall and 3-3 in GSC play.
Washburn the matches in Florida and Georgia with a 3-0 record and won at RV Southeastern Oklahoma State on Feb. 27, 4-3, while also wining at RV Drury 4-3 to open the season. Maja Jung is 3-0 in singles for the season, 1-0 at No. 2 and 2-0 at No. 5. In doubles, Cadence Lynn and Marta Torres are 3-0 in doubles, going 1-0 at the top spot and 2-0 at No. 3.
Shorter is 1-3 on the year and 0-3 in league play with losses to Christian Brothers, West Florida and Auburn Montgomery. Shorter won 4-3 over Piedmont College its last time out. The Lady Hawks went 2-5 and 0-4 last season and dropped a 7-0 decision to VSU in Valdosta on Feb. 11.
Lee enters with a 4-2 record and a 1-1 mark in the GSC. The Lady Flames have won two-straight with victories over Lincoln Memorial (6-1) and at West Georgia (5-2). Lisa Kirr leads the team with 5-1 mark overall in singles, going 1-0 at the top spot and 4-1 at No. 2, while Hayden Smith is 4-2 at No. 6 singles. In doubles, Carley Sickinger and Sierra Donaldson are 5-0 overall in doubles, including 4-0 at No. 3 and 1-0 at No. 2.
VSU pulled out a thrilling 4-3 victory over the Lady Flames last season on Mar. 7, in Valdosta. VSU swept the doubles matches and Widdershoven used a three-set victory at the top spot to clinch the match, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 over Sickinger.
Georgia College is 2-2 on the year and will play at Brenau, Savannah State and Flagler before hosting VSU on Mar. 13. VSU downed GC 4-1 in Valdosta on Feb. 7, 2020, in the last meeting between the two teams.
Following the Georgia College matches, VSU returns home for the final three home matches of the season, Mar. 23 versus Montevallo, Mar. 31 vs. Columbus State and Apr. 2 versus West Florida.
