No. 7 Blazers Sweep Doubleheader from Albany State

VALDOSTA, Ga. – Behind a school-record six home runs in the opener, the No. 7 Valdosta State softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday versus Albany State at Steel's Diamond.  VSU won the opener 15-0 and the nightcap 9-2.  For the doubleheader, VSU belted seven home runs for led by sophomore Kiley Robb with two round-trippers.

#7 Valdosta State 15, Albany State 0 (Game One)
VSU (14-3) used a single through the left side from junior Nicole Pennington and a double from senior Logan Hill put runners in scoring position.  Sophomore, and reigning Gulf South Conference Player of the Week, sophomore Kiley Robb, reached on a throwing error, plating Pennington for a 1-0 lead.

The Blazers again put runners at second and third with one out in the bottom of the second.  A walk with two away loaded the bases and senior Logan Hill delivered on the first pitch, a two RBI double to the left field corner for a 3-0 lead.  Sophomore Samantha Richards struck out the side in the third for the Blazers and her seventh strikeout of the game.

Freshman Aniston Gano began the bottom of the third with a solo home run to right field for her fourth round-tripper of the season.  Gano was named GSC Freshman of the Week for her efforts last week versus Union.  VSU then loaded the bases with one out for the top of the order.  ASU hurler Sydney Pettus' pitch got past catcher Rebecca Blanton for a 5-0 lead.  Freshman Morgan Hill laced a two RBI single through the right side and Pennington belted her sixth home run of the season – a two run shot for a 9-0 lead.  Kierra Washington came into pitch for Pettus following the home run.  Robb blasted her seventh home run following a single from L. Hill for an 11-0 lead.  Junior Baylee Everson added an RBI single up the middle for a 12-0 run as VSU scored a season-high nine runs in the frame.

With two out in the bottom of the fourth, L. Hill golfed a home run to right field for her fourth hit of the game on two doubles, a single and a home run for a 13-0 lead.  It was her third home run of the season and the fourth of the game.  Not to be outdone, freshman pinch-hitter Katie Proctor belted her first home run for back-to-back jacks and a 14-0 lead.  The, sophomore pinch-hitter Taylor Lewis belted a home run to center for three-straight home runs by the Blazers.

VSU freshman pitcher Mia DeAngelis pitched the fifth for her first collegiate action.  She fanned two and also assisted on a ground out for the final out.  The Blazers recorded a season-high 15 on 13 hits, while recording six home runs by six different players and also had three doubles for the game.  L. Hill paced the team going 4 for 4 with two runs scored, two doubles and a home run while she drove in three.  Richards improved to 9-2 on the year, going four innings, allowing two infield hits and fanned ten.

The six home runs in the game marked a new school record for the Blazers, as the previous best was five set in 2018 versus West Georgia.  The six round-trippers also were one shy of the GSC record of seven set four times.  The opener was the tenth run-rule victory of the season for the Blazers.

#7 Valdosta State 9, Albany State 2 (Game Two)
M. Hill made a great diving catch to rob Destiny Herrera of a hit and possibly extra bases for the second out of the top of the first.  A pop out to shortstop ended the inning with senior Avery Lamb starting game two in the circle for the Blazers.

With one out in the bottom of the first, a walk and a hit batsmen put two on as Robb singled up the middle for a RBI and a 1-0 lead.  An RBI on a ground out to second plated the second run for a 2-0 lead through the first inning.

The second triple of the season for the Blazers, this time from sophomore Hunter Meadows, pushed the VSU lead to 3-0 and an RBI ground out made the score 4-0.

ASU's (0-6) Glory Seay took Lamb deep to left field cutting the Blazer lead to 4-2 in the top of the fourth with nobody out.  It was Seay's first home run of the season.   VSU turned the twin killing to get out of the inning without further damage, marking the second double play of the season.

Sophomore Meadows put down a great bunt up the first base line for runners at the corners and one out in the bottom of the fourth.  M. Hill hit an RBI ground out for a 5-2 score.

Richards replaced Lamb to begin the fifth inning as Lamb went four innings, allowing two hits, two earned runs no walks and three strikeouts.  Lamb faced 17 batters and recorded 55 pitches.

Robb belted a two run home run in the bottom of the fifth for her second round-tripper of the day and a 7-2 lead.  In the bottom of the sixth, VSU scored two more runs for a 9-2 lead.  Richards came out for the seventh for her second save of the season.  Richards pitched the final three innings, surrendering one hit, walked one and fanned eight.  Lamb improved to 2-0 on the year in her four innings of work.

Offensively in the nightcap, VSU tallied nine runs on six hits with one error as Robb was 3 for 4 with a run scored and four RBI.  She had a home run and a double.  Meadows was 2 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI along with a triple.
