Aniston Gano were named Gulf South Conference Player and Freshman of the Week, respectively, the conference office announced Tuesday. This is the first weekly honor of the season for Robb and second for Gano.
Robb, a native of Joliet, Ill., had an outstanding week as she belted two grand slams and three home runs overall in a 2-1 series victory over Union. She hit .400 for the series on 4 of 10 from the dish, three home runs and drove in ten. Robb slugged 1.300 for the series and reached base at a .455 clip with one walk. She had one stolen base. In the opener, Robb accounted for driving in six of the Blazers' eight runs as she belted the grand slam in the first inning and then hit a two run blast in the second frame. She finished the game 2 for 3 with two runs scored, two home runs and six RBI. In the finale, Robb went 1 for 2 with two runs scored, a home run and four RBI in the 13-2 victory Sunday.
For the season, Robb is hitting .381 in 15 starts, with 16 hits, 12 runs scored, three doubles, a team-high six home runs and 21 RBI. She is slugging .881 for the season and reaching base at a .480 clip with eight walks, while going a perfect 5 for 5 in stolen bases. This is Robb's second weekly honor of her career.
Gano continued her impressive start to her career for the red and black as earned Freshman of the Week honors for the second time in three weeks. She hit a team-best .714 for the series against Union on 5 of 7 from the plate for a team-high in hits. She scored three runs and tallied the first triple of the season by a Blazer and one home run. The Lakeland, Ga., native, drove in two, while she slugged a team-best 1.429 and reached base at an .800 clip with three walks and no strikeouts. In the opener, she missed hitting for the cycle by a double.
For the season, Gano leads the team with a .444 average on 16 of 36 from the dish. She has scored eight runs with two doubles, one triple, three home runs and driven in 13. She is slugging .808 for the season with 11 walks for third on the team and a .563 on base average. Gano has two stolen bases in two attempts this season.
The Blazers host a doubleheader Wednesday at 4 p.m. versus Albany State at Steel's Diamond at Blazer Park and then a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m. versus Georgia Southwestern. VSU (12-3, 10-2 GSC) is in the midst of a ten-game homestand and is scheduled to conclude the home streak with three very important Gulf South Conference games against rival West Florida, Mar. 27-28.
