Blazer Tennis Teams Both Victorious at Shorter, 6-1

ROME, Ga. – The No. 7 Valdosta State men's tennis team won 6-1 at Shorter today, as did the women's teams by the same score in a doubleheader sweep of the Hawks.  The men's team improved to 6-0 on the year and 3-0 in the Gulf South Conference, while the women's team now stands at 2-4 and 2-1 in GSC play.

In doubles, the Blazers won two of three matches, winning with freshmen Christian Wedel and Cameron Henricy Trigolos at the No. 2 spot, 6-3, while freshman Edward Etty and junior Adam Kalivoda won 6-3 at No. 3 for a 1-0 lead in the team scoring.  Shorter's duo of Strahinja Radanovic and Jan Kos won at No. 1 over sophomores Robert Cizek and Christian Felline, 6-4.

Both senior Yohan Nguyen and junior Florian Simbozel, the normal top doubles team for the Blazers, did not play on Friday, nor either in singles.  VSU took a 2-0 lead with a win by Trigolos at No. 3 singles, 7-5, 6-1, over Kirandevaa Namadevan.  Wedel downed Radanovic in three sets, 6-1, 5-7, 6-1 at No. 1 singles for a 3-0 lead.

The Hawks (2-4, 0-4 GSC) had their lone win in singles at No. 2 as Jan Kos upended Felline, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4) for a 3-1 VSU lead.  Felline played his first match as a Blazer on Thursday in a 4-0 victory over No. 21 Washburn.

The Blazers clinched the match at No. 5 singles as Cizek got his first win in singles this season with a convincing 6-2, 6-1 win over Jacob Gailey for a 4-1 score.  In GSC play, all matches are played out as VSU got two more victories at No. 6 singles with Kalivoda, while Etty needed three sets at No. 4 for the victory.

On the women's side, the Blazers won all three doubles matches, dropping just six games between the three tandems (18-6).  Senior Estee Widdershoven and sophomore Eva Rivoal won at No. 1, 6-1, while freshman Julia Saving and sophomore Birte Langenstein won at No. 2, 6-2, and junior Amelia Cornwell and junior Hera Bjork Brynjarsdottir won at No. 3, 6-2.

VSU won four of the five singles matches in straight-sets, while Cornwell needed three sets for her first victory of the season, 1-6, 6-0, 10-8.  Isabel Nikolaeva won at No. 2 singles for the Hawks' (1-4, 0-4 GSC) lone win, 6-2, 6-2.

The VSU tennis teams will be back in action Saturday at 10 a.m. at Lee and then on the road on Wednesday, Mar. 17 at Georgia College at 2 p.m.  VSU then returns home Mar. 26 versus Montevallo at 2 p.m. at the VSU Tennis Courts.
