VALDOSTA, Ga. – On a beautiful and sunny, South Georgia spring day with temperatures in the high 70s, the Valdosta State women's soccer team battled to a scoreless draw. The Blazers moved to 2-1-2 overall and 2-0-2 in Gulf South Conference play, while Montevallo now is 4-1-1 and 3-0-1 in league play.
The Blazers fought off a blistering Montevallo attack as freshman
Landon Carter produced her first clean sheet of her Blazer career with nine saves in the match as she now is 1-0-2 in three starts. She also staved off nine shots in the second overtime alone by the Falcons. All three matches Carter has started have either gone the distance or into double overtime.
Montevallo finished the match with 24 shots and ten on target, while VSU had four shots and three on frame. Sophomore
Rachael Howard, sophomore
Mallory Johnson and senior
Kira Malpica each had shots on frame for the Blazers. The match marked the first time in five matches this season Howard hadn't registered a point.
For the Falcons, Romee Contreras had a team-high five shots with four on target, while Kayla Travis had four shots and one on frame. UM goalkeeper Angel Hailey had three saves in the match.
Montevallo set the tone early with three shots and two corner kicks, but had one shot block and one sail wide. VSU didn't have a shot or shot on goal in the half. UM held a 11-0 lead in shots in the first half, while leading 3-0 in shots on frame.
VSU found its offensive footing in the second half as Malpica had a great run and Hailey was up to the task for the save and the first VSU shot of the match at the 53:53 mark. VSU almost had what would've been the game winner, as Malpica's shot went off the head of a Montevallo player and Hailey had to make a great save to keep it from the back of the net. A few minutes later, freshman
Ashley Puentes' shot was blocked and Johnson's shot was saved again by Hailey. Later, Howard had a great look, but Hailey made her third save of the half.
Carter came up with a big save on a shot from Contreras at the 85:10 mark and, off the rebound, Victoria Ochoa's shot sailed high. UM had one last shot in the 87
th minute as Travis' ball went wide of the frame.
After a first overtime with no shots and a corner kick from each team, the second overtime was wild with VSU hanging on for dear life. Contreras had a shot blocked at 102:09, followed by a header from Kaitlyn Harvey the first of four saves from Carter in the period.
Fate would not be on the side of the Falcons as Darnell's shot hit off the post at the 106:30 mark, followed by a shot from Contreras and a diving save from Carter to deflect the ball. Kaeri Ward's rebounded shot hit the post and then Travis' shot was blocked away and she followed her own shot for a second shot and save from Carter in a flurry of action.
With five seconds left in the second overtime, UM's Kira Bochard fired a shot and save from Carter as she again dove for the save. Contreras followed on the open net, but a VSU defender saved the day with the team save to preserve the tie.
VSU closes out the home spring regular season Friday at 3 p.m. versus Shorter at the VSU Soccer Complex. It'll be Senior Day as the Blazers will honor six seniors prior to the match. The class includes;
Lexie Hall,
Nikki De La Garza,
