Blazers Finish No. 2 in Final AFCA Top 25

WACO, Texas – Finishing as NCAA Division II National Runner-Up, the Valdosta State football team moved to No. 2 in the final American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Top 25, released Monday.  VSU entered the playoffs beginning in November fifth in the AFCA poll.
 
Ferris State, who defeated the Blazers on Saturday evening in McKinney, Texas, took over the top spot in the poll on Oct. 18, and finished the season with a perfect 14-0 record.  VSU finished 12-2 on the year, while Colorado School of Mines came in third in the poll, followed by Northwest Missouri State at fourth and Shepherd (W.Va.) rounded out the top five.  
 
Bowie State finished sixth in the poll, followed by Grand Valley State, Kutztown, Notre Dame (Ohio) and Harding was tenth.  West Florida and West Georgia finished 12th and 13th, respectively, while Albany State was 18th.  VSU finished the season 5-2 against ranked teams in the final poll.  
 
VSU competed on Saturday in its sixth national title game in program history as the Blazers have won four national championships in 2004, 2007, 2012 and 2018.  The four victories are tied with Grand Valley State for third all-time in NCAA Division II for championship-winning campaigns.
