VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State University men's basketball team is set to take on the Lee Flames Monday night at 8 p.m. in Cleveland, Tennessee. The Blazers are coming off an 85-70 victory over the Shorter Hawks on Saturday.Â
The Blazers shot 32 of 63 during the game against Shorter and six of 19 outside the arc. Hamilton and Selders led the team with 16 points each. Hamilton picked up his first double-double of the season, went six of 11 from the field, and picked up ten rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Selders, who had a season-high 16 points, went seven of nine from the field and picked up five rebounds, one assist, one block, and two steals.
Maurice Gordon finished the game with six points, two rebounds and a block. Mohamed Fofana finished the game with seven rebounds, six points, two assists and one steal. Redshirt freshman Jeremy Golson led the team in three-pointers, sinking three of seven outside the arc and picking up four steals, one assist, and nine points.
Early Season Losses
VSU fell to the Clayton State Lakers on Devember 7, 81-75. The meeting marked the second time VSU and Clayton State have met this season. The Blazers went 30 of 69 (43.5%) from the field and six of 18 (33.3%) from outside the arc. The Blazers scored 14 points off turnovers and scored eight second-chance points. VSU came within one point of the Lakers with eight minutes left to play, but couldn't outlast the Lakers' offense. Michael Cole ended the game as the second-leading scorer, putting up 17 points and seven rebounds and one assist, just behind Jacolbey Owens, who scored a season-high 27 points and shot 10 of 16 from the field.
The Blazers also fell 86-79 to the West Georgia Wolves on December 4 to open GSC play. Junior guard Jacolbey Owens and sophomore guard DJ Mitchell led the Blazers' offense with 16 points each. Junior forward Mohamed Fofana led VSU in rebounds with eight while also recording ten points on the night, one assist, and one steal. Owens recorded four assists, one block, and one steal while Mitchell grabbed seven rebounds.
vs. Lee
The Blazers are facing off against the Flames for the 15th time since 2013. The Flames are coming off a 74-71 loss to West Florida on Saturday.Â
Jayce Willingham led the Flames with 16 points and six rebounds. Kennedy added 12 points and Jason Landman posted 10 points and six rebounds. Beyuan Hendricks dished off four assists and finished with eight points. Lee shot 41 percent from the field, 25 percent from the beyond the arc (6 of 24) and 9 of 10 from the charity stripe. West Florida finished the contest converting 53 percent from the field, 38 percent from the 3-point line (5 of 13) and 7 of 11 from the foul line.
VSU has a 3-3 record with the Flames on the road. In the last three meetings, all in Valdosta, the Blazers went 0-3.
