Blazer Volleyball Host Annual Youth Volleyball Night this Friday at Valdosta High School

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State volleyball team hosts its annual Youth Volleyball Night Friday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. at Valdosta High School.  VSU will be battling Christian Brothers that evening also at Valdosta High School.


With free admission to the match, the Blazer volleyball players will be autographing a team photo after the match against CBU and throwing out mini volleyballs and youth shirts at the start of the game. Fans are required to wear a face mask at Valdosta High School.
 
VSU goes for the season-sweep of Christian Brothers as the Blazers won 3-1 in Memphis, Tenn., Oct. 1. In that match, VSU hit .222 with 49 kills, 67 digs and 44 assists, while recording 12 blocks.  Freshmen Jojo Smith and Kylie Stroehlein led the team with 11 kills each, while graduate student Deona Mims tallied nine kills.  Smith finished with 13 digs and she, along with senior Tammy Reyes-Perez, tallied double-doubles. Reyes-Perez had 34 assists and 16 digs.  
 
The Blazers are currently 11-17 overall and 4-8 in conference while the Bucs are 2-25 overall and 0-12 in conference.  VSU is 7-8 in the last 15 matches versus CBU.  The Bucs have won four of the last six matches in the series.  This is the first neutral site match since VSU won 3-1 on Sept. 18, 2010, in Huntsville, Ala.
 
This season, the Blazers are second in the GSC and 20th nationally in total attacks with 3,731, while the Blazers are fourth in the GSC in assists (1,116) for 34th nationally.  VSU is third in the GSC and 35th nationally in team digs with 1,629 and fifth in the GSC in team kills (1,187).  The Blazers are sixth in the GSC and 63rd nationally in service aces with 155.  
 
Individually, senior Tammy Reyes-Perez is second in the GSC in assists per set (9.27), while she is tenth nationally (second in GSC) in total assists with 955. Redshirt freshman Lyara Rosario is 22nd nationally and first in the GSC in total digs with 499.  She also leads the GSC in digs per set at a 4.80 clip for 56th nationally. Reigning GSC Freshman of the Week, Jojo Smith, is third in the GSC in kills per set, averaging 3.69 on the season and has recorded 236 kills for the year and swinging at a .149 clip.
