INDIANAPOLIS – Following the thrilling 36-34 victory over rival and No. 3-ranked West Georgia on Saturday evening, the Valdosta State football team remained the top-seeded team in the newest NCAA Super Region Two rankings, announced Monday afternoon.
VSU is 8-0 overall and 5-0 in Gulf South Conference play and also remained No. 2 in the latest American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Top 25, released Monday. Following VSU in the NCAA Super Region Two poll this week is Bowie State and third is Albany State just like last week.
West Florida and West Georgia flip after the loss by the Wolves to VSU and UWF's win at Mississippi College on Saturday evening. Wingate, who was sixth last week, was upset by Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday and fell out this week, allowing Mars Hill to move up one spot to sixth. Newberry moved up from eighth to seventh and West Alabama from ninth to eighth this week. Savannah State moves into the poll in ninth and Lenoir-Rhyne checks in at tenth. VSU currently is 4-0 against teams in the top ten of the rankings with wins over Albany State (21-3), West Georgia (36-34), West Alabama (42-17) and Savannah State (53-7).
VSU hosts North Greenville this weekend for Homecoming and Senior Day at 3 p.m., on Saturday at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium, before closing the regular season at West Florida on Nov. 13 in Pensacola, Fla.
This year's bracket will feature the top seven teams in the final rankings, scheduled to be released on Nov. 14 live on NCAA.com. The top team in the region will get a "bye" for the first round, while Nos. 2-4 seeds will host Nos. 5-7, on Nov. 20 for the first round. The second round is scheduled for Nov. 27, while the third round is set for Dec. 4 and the national semifinals are Dec. 11.
Once again, the NCAA Division II National Championship will return to McKinney, Texas, and scheduled for Dec. 18. VSU won the national championship in McKinney in 2018 with a thrilling 49-47 victory over Ferris State for the school's first 14-0 record. The Gulf South Conference has had a team play for the national championship each of the past four playing seasons, dating back to 2016.
VSU is 26-13 all-time in the NCAA postseason and looking for its 18th trip to the postseason in program history and third-straight.
