VALDOSTA, Ga. – Valdosta State football's senior Lio'undre Gallimore and volleyball freshman Jojo Smith were named the Steel's Jewelry Blazer Athletes of the Week, announced Thursday.
VSU football recorded a dominating win over Shorter on Saturday, 49-13, to remain undefeated this season (4-0, 1-0 Gulf South Conference) as it is ranked as high as No. 3 nationally. The Blazer volleyball team recorded wins at Christian Brothers, 3-1, and at Clark Atlanta, 3-0, last week as the team went 2-1 for the week.
Gallimore, a native of Miami Gardens, Fla., hauled in seven catches for a season-high 135 yards and two scores against Shorter on Oct. 2. Gallimore also combined with junior quarterback Ivory Durham to pick up the Blazers' first touchdown of the night on the opening drive of the game. Gallimore finished the game with two touchdowns, with his longest receiving pass being 51-yard touchdown reception.
Smith, a native of Jefferson, Ga., and this week's Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Week honoree totaled 23 kills, averaging 3.29 kills per set and a .164 hitting percentage last week. A total of 11 kills were recorded in VSU's win against Christian Brothers on Oct. 1, where Smith also totaled 13 digs, recording her second double-double of the season.
Blazer volleyball is back in action this weekend, with two Gulf South Conference matchups against Lee and Shorter, both at The Complex. VSU hosts Lee on Friday, Oct. 8 at 6 p.m., followed by Shorter on Saturday at 3 p.m.
The No. 3 Blazer football team closes a three-game homestand Saturday, Oct. 9, at 7 p.m., at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium versus Delta State. The game will be the annual Pink Out Game, and all Blazer fans are encouraged to wear pink to the game.
