Blazers Drop Heartbreaker to Montevallo in Double Overtime

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Valdosta State women's soccer team fell 2-1 in double overtime on the road to Montevallo Friday night. The Blazers fall to 9-5-1 on the year and 6-4-1 in Gulf South Conference play, while the Falcons improve to 7-7-1 overall and 4-6-1 in the GSC.

The Blazers started strong, with sophomores Mallory Johnson and Bailey Hern getting shots off in the sixth and seventh minute but blocked by the Falcons' defense. Hern recorded her fifth goal of the season and recorded 61 minutes during the match.

VSU got on the board in the 14th minute with a shot from Hern to the bottom left corner, assisted by senior Lyana Steele to give the Blazers a 1-0 lead.

Montevallo bounced back to equalize the game in the 36th minute, with a goal from the Falcon's Zariah Nogales.

VSU finished the first 45 recording seven shots and three corners, while Montevallo recorded 11 shots and three corners.

VSU and Montevallo went back and forth in the second half but couldn't capitalize on any chances. Sophomore Amber Saunders put up a shot in the 55th minute but was blocked by Montevallo's defense.

The Blazers finished regulation with a 1-1 scoreline and put up four shots with three on goal and two corners.

In the first overtime period, VSU recorded one shot, as the Falcons continued to put pressure on the Blazers' backline. The Falcons finally broke through in the 102nd minute from UM's Espy Sanchez to bring the final scoreline to 2-1 in favor of the Falcons.

The match marked the Blazers' third overtime game, with a double-overtime win against Clayton State on September 2, a double-overtime draw with West Florida on September 24, and tonight's loss with UM.

Freshman goalkeeper Emma Pruett was between the posts the entire 102 minutes, picking up four saves and allowing two goals past her.

VSU falls to 4-2-1 all-time with Montevallo and 2-1 on the road. The Blazers are back in action on the road on Sunday against Auburn Montgomery at 2 p.m. ET.
