Tammy Reyes-Perez and freshman
Jojo Smith record double-doubles. Reyes-Perez tallied 59 assists and 13 digs while Smith recorded 17 kills and 12 digs. Â

First Set:Â
Mississippi College got out front 4-2, early in the first set of the match, but the Blazers tied the score at four with a kill by freshman
Caitlin Warnshuis.Â
Â
VSU took the lead by two with freshman
Jojo Smith at the serving line and graduate student
Deona Mims recording a kill, but the game remained a back-and-forth contest. Â
Â
Tied at 12, VSU took the lead again 15-13, with a kill by junior
Zoey Chilcote, assisted by senior
Tammy Reyes-Perez, and sent senior
Megan Stanton to the serving line as she looked to build the Blazers' lead.Â

Following a Choctaw timeout, Mississippi College continued to fight back as they brought the score to a one-point difference, 20-19, and forced a Blazer timeout.Â

Tied at 20, the Choctaws continued and took the lead 23-22, as VSU's head coach
Kaleigh Zoucha called her second and final timeout of the set.Â

The set went to extra points as the Blazers led 25-24 and Mississippi College called their last timeout of the set. VSU went on and took the first set 28-26 with a kill by Mims.Â

Second Set:Â
The second set went point for point until the Choctaws took the lead 13-11 with a kill. VSU followed back with a kill by Smith and sent redshirt freshman
Lyara Rosario to the serving line.Â

VSU tied the match at 13 but MC took the lead again 17-14 and forced a Blazer timeout.Â

Graduate
Grace Daugherty tallied a solo block and a kill and brought the Choctaws' lead to one, 17-16.Â

The Blazers continued to fight back but still trailed the Choctaws by one until MC rallied and took the second set 25-22.Â

Third Set:Â
The Blazers took the lead 3-1 early in the second set, but the Choctaws tied the match at three with a service ace.Â

VSU continued to lead 7-6 with kills by Smith and Warnshuis, but MC tied the match again at ten and continued to take the lead 13-11.Â

Followed by a Blazers timeout, Mississippi College continued to lead 16-11 scoring from kills and VSU hitting errors.Â

VSU took their second timeout of the set and followed with a rally of four points, which brought the score to 18-15 in favor of MC, and forced a Choctaw timeout.Â

The Blazers continued to fight back but it was not enough as the Choctaws took the third set 25-20.Â

Fourth Set:Â
The fourth set became tied at five before the Blazers took a four-point lead with a service ace by Rosario and MC hitting errors, 9-5.Â

MC rallied off kills and brought the Blazers lead to two, but two kills by Warnshuis brought the score to 16-12 and forced a Choctaw timeout.Â

Following the MC timeout, the Blazers continued to lead 20-13 with kills by Mims, Warnshuis and Smith.Â

Mims recorded another kill and sent Reyes-Perez back to the serving line as she looked to start a rally but was stopped by a Choctaw kill.Â

Mississippi College recorded two kills and caused a Blazer timeout at 21-17 in favor of the Blazers, but VSU continued to lead and took the fourth set 25-19 and forced a decisive fifth set.Â

Fifth Set:Â
VSU started the fifth set off strong as they led 5-1 scoring from kills by Smith and Warnshuis and a block by Chilcote.Â

The Choctaws used both timeouts early in the set as they trailed the Blazers 7-1.

With junior
Erin Ergle back at the serving line, the Blazers rallied and brought the score to 9-5 but the Choctaws continued to fight back and brought the Blazers lead to two, 10-8, as Zoucha called a timeout.Â

Following the timeout, the Choctaws continued to rally but still trailed the Blazers 11-10.Â

With a service ace by Mims, the Blazers took the fifth set 15-11, and the match 3-2.Â

Inside the Numbers:Â
The Blazers tallied 69 kills while hitting a .274, 68 digs, 65 assists, six service aces, five solo blocks, and two block assists. Â
Â
Leading the Blazers in kills was Warnshuis, with a career high of 20 as she recorded only one error and hit a .633. Mims also tallied 15 kills followed by Daughtry with 14. Rosario led VSU with 19 digs and three service aces. Redshirt freshman
Ramsey Marshall recorded eight digs followed by senior
Rebecca Sills with five. Chilcote added two solo blocks and one block assist for the Blazers.Â

The Blazers improve to 11-11 on the year and 4-5 in GSC play while the Choctaws fall to 5-9 and 3-6 in conference play.Â

The Blazers head to Winter Haven, Fla. this weekend to compete in the GSC/SSC Regional Crossover on Friday, October 22. The Blazers face Barry at 12:15 pm and Lynn at 7 pm. VSU concludes the weekend battling Florida Southern on October 23, at 2:30 pm.Â
