VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State volleyball team continues Gulf South Conference play in The Complex Wednesday evening, facing Mississippi College at 6 p.m. Following the mid-week match, VSU is set to compete in the South Region Crossover, Oct. 22-23, at the AdventHealth Fieldhouse in Winter Haven, Fla.
VSU went 1-1 last week as it fell to Lee (3-0), turned in a great performance with a 3-0 shutout of West Alabama. The Blazers are 10-11 overall and 3-5 in Gulf South Conference play.
This matchup against Mississippi College is their first matchup of the season and since Nov. 16, 2019, when the Blazers came out on top 3-0. VSU has an undefeated record against the Choctaws dating back to Oct. 3, 2014, and owns an 11-0 record in the series, including 6-0 in Valdosta. MC has won six games in the 11 matches and only the 2018 edition went five sets with a 3-2 win by the Blazers in Valdosta (25-18, 25-14, 17-25, 25-27, 15-7).
MC is 5-7 on the season overall and 3-4 in GSC play, as they sit seventh in the conference. The Choctaws are currently sixth in the conference in hitting percentage (.188) and tied for third in assists per set (11.17) and tied for third in kills per set (12.21).
Before facing VSU on Wednesday, MC is scheduled to battle West Georgia tonight at 6 p.m., before heading to Titletown for Wednesday's match.
Following the mid-week matchup, the Blazers head to Winter Haven, Fla., to compete in the 2021 Sunshine State Conference/Gulf South Conference Region Crossover, held in the AdventHealth Fieldhouse.
The two-day South Region Volleyball Crossover is in its sixth year and will host twenty-four teams. A total of 11 of these teams are from the Sunshine State Conference with 12 from the Gulf South Conference, along with Flagler College of the Peach Belt Conference.
The Blazers are scheduled for two matches on Friday, Oct. 22, facing Barry University at 12:15 p.m., and Lynn University at 7 p.m. On Saturday, the Blazers are scheduled to conclude the tournament versus Florida Southern at 2:30 p.m.
VSU takes on Barry University on Court #4 for the first time since Oct. 13, 2017, when the Buccaneers won 3-1. The Blazers are 2-4 in the last six meetings with the Buccaneers. Barry is currently 9-6 overall and 5-6 in the SSC.
Followed by the Barry matchup, VSU faces Lynn on Court #1. VSU looks to redeem itself from the last matchup between VSU and Lynn on Oct. 19, 2019, when the Fighting Knights took the match 3-0. Lynn is currently 11-7 overall and 8-3 in the SSC.
The Blazers wrap up the crossover with a matchup against Florida Southern on Court #3, Saturday afternoon. The last faceoff between the Blazers and the Mocs was on Oct. 19, 2018, when Florida Southern took the victory 3-0. The Mocs are currently 9-6 overall and 6-5 in the SSC.
