VALDOSTA, Ga. – Valdosta State senior softball infielder Logan Hill was named to the Gulf South Conference Top Ten, announced Thursday afternoon by the league office.  This award recognizes the top five female and top five male student-athletes for their athletic, academic and extracurricular achievement during the 2019-20 academic year.  The top female and male from each group of honorees will be awarded the Commissioner's Trophy, which is the conference's most elite award.

The "Top Ten" are selected with the assistance of an advisory committee representing the Athletic Directors, Senior Woman Administrators, Sports Information Directors, Faculty Athletics Representatives, and Presidents from randomly selected GSC schools, which makes a recommendation to the Commissioner, who has the final decision.

The female Top Ten Winners, along with Hill are, Abby Bertram (Lee, Basketball), Taylor Gonzales (Montevallo, Cross Country/Track & Field), Jordyn Poppen (West Florida, Volleyball), and Katie Taylor (Mississippi College, Soccer).

VSU and West Florida are the only two schools with both male and female Top Ten selections this year as Blazer men's basketball senior Clay Guillozet also earned the honor along with West Florida football standout Tate Lehtio.

Hill, a native of Lake Park, Ga., now is in the running for the Commissioner's Trophy, which will be announced Friday, May 29, by the league office.  The Commissioner's Trophy annually recognizes athletic, academic and extracurricular achievement and is awarded to the top overall male and female student-athletes.  This award is one of the most prestigious prizes in all of Division II and the most significant individual honor the league presents.  It was first awarded in 1975 and honored the outstanding male student-athlete in the conference.  In 1983, when the league officially began conducting women's championships, the GSC began honoring its outstanding female student-athletes as well.

She is the 11th women's honoree and the first since Caitlyn Calhoun in 2014-15.  She is the 18th different Blazer overall to earn a spot on the GSC Top Ten.  VSU softball standouts Morgan Faulk (Johnson) and Courtney Albritton each were GSC Top Ten and named the Commissioner's Trophy recipients with Faulk winning in 2011-12 and 2012-13, while Albritton won in 2013-14 and 2014-15.  The GSC Top Ten began in 1996-97 and was named the "Top Eight" from 1997-2004, before expanding to the "Top Ten."

If Hill were to win the Commissioner's Trophy on Friday, she would become the 13th overall winner and ninth different honoree from VSU since the award began in 1975.  VSU has won the Commissioner's Trophy 12 times overall for third-most in league history.  The league record is 13 held by Delta State and former league member North Alabama.  Faulk, Albritton, Bridgett Moore (1985-86 / 1986-87, women's basketball) and Chris Hatcher (1993-94 / 1994-95, football) each won the Commissioner's Trophy in back-to-back years, marking VSU with the most back-to-back winners of any school in league history.

Hill got off to a torrid pace to begin the season in 2020, before it was cut short in March due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.  She led the nation in home runs with 11 round-trippers and was second nationally in on base average at a .531 clip, while slugging a team-best .984 for sixth nationally.  Hill was eighth nationally in total bases with 63 for second in the GSC, while hitting a team-high .406 for the season with 26 hits in 64 at bats.  She had a team-high 25 RBI and drew 16 free passes for most on the team.  Hill recorded 135 putouts in 142 chances with seven assists and no errors at first base for the Blazers.  She has six multi-hit games for second on the team and had a season-high ten-game hitting streak, while reaching base in 15-straight games during the season to lead the team.  Hill was named GSC Player of the Week once and had three games of two home runs to lead the team.  She drove in seven on a 3 for 3 game with two runs scored and two home runs versus Albany State (2/27/20).

Had the season been played in its entirety, Hill was on pace for potentially setting the NCAA record for home runs in a season, as the record is 32 for NCAA Division II in a single season.  Hill's 11 dingers were in the first 23 games of the season before the Pandemic began.

She was named to the Academic All-District Team ® as selected by CoSIDA this season with a 3.96 GPA in health sciences.  Hill has played and started in 125 games and collected 103 hits in 345 at bats for a .299 average.  She has 19 doubles, 25 home runs and driven in 83 for a .571 slugging percentage.  She has drawn 63 walks and been plunked eight times for a .417 on base average for her career.  She has 715 putouts in 794 chances with 63 assists and 16 errors for a .980 fielding percentage after transferring to VSU from USC-Upstate before her sophomore season.

Hill also had outstanding community service experience as she also was a member of the VSU SAAC for two years and was a senior member of FCA in 2019-20.  She has accumulated over 180 hours of community service during her time at VSU.
