WINGATE, N.C. – The Valdosta State baseball team posted a 13-0 victory on a snowy Saturday afternoon over Palm Beach Atlantic at Wingate University. The Blazers improved to 3-2 on the year, while PBA fell to 2-2.
VSU tallied a season-high 13 runs on 11 hits with one error, while PBA had no runs on four hits with two errors. The shutout was the first of the season for the Blazers, giving VSU its third win over the Sailfish in the last five meetings. The teams hadn't met since 2013, prior to Saturday.
The Blazers scored in five-straight innings from the second through the sixth innings, and put up four runs in the fifth and five in the sixth for the 13-0 score. Senior
Mike Christopoulos went 3 for 4 with three runs scored, one RBI and a walk, while senior
Alec Aleywine went 1 for 5 with two runs scored, a home run and three RBI. Junior Ryan DelNegro went 1 for 3 with two runs scored, four RBI and a walk. VSU drew a free pass 13 times in the game.
On the mound, junior
Cooper Cain (1-1) went five innings, combining for the shutout, allowing three hits, walked three and fanned six. Aleywine pitched three innings, allowing one hit, walked three and fanned four, while junior
Jeremy Adams pitched one inning.
Four different PBA players had hits and two had doubles, but the Sailfish had trouble on the mound as Troy Klemm (0-1) went 4.2 innings, allowing six hits, seven runs – just two earned, walked four and fanned five. In all, the two errors by PBA led to six unearned runs for the Blazers.
Senior
Logan Stephens began the bottom of the second with a free pass and Christopoulos doubled him home for a 1-0 lead. In the third, senior
Dalton Board began the frame with a double to left center and then scored on a ground out by Aleywine for a 2-0 lead.
Two unearned runs scored in the fourth for the Blazers and then another error on PBA proved costly with a three RBI double to left center from DelNegro and junior
Seth Caballes singled to center plating another run for an 8-0 lead. Aleywine's two run blast in the sixth and three bases loaded walks made the score 13-0.
VSU returns home to open Gulf South Conference play next Saturday at 1 p.m. with a doubleheader versus Shorter at Billy Grant Field at Tommy Thomas Park.
