No. 11 Blazers Open 2021 at Auburn Montgomery

VALDOSTA, Ga. - The No. 11-ranked Valdosta State men's basketball team opens up the new year in Montgomery, Ala. with a Gulf South Conference matchup against Auburn Montgomery Saturday, Jan. 2 at 7 p.m. ET and Sunday, Jan. 3 at 3 p.m. ET.

VSU (1-0, 1-0 GSC) started off their season with a 62-60 win at West Georgia, before their next two games of the season were postponed. The Blazers were led by a career high 26 points from senior guard Imoras Agee in the game, while redshirt sophomore Jakari Gallon led the team with a new career high of 13 rebounds.
 
In a back-and-forth game, Agee tied the game up at 57 with a deep ball with 4:19 left to play. Just two possessions later, the senior hit another ball from beyond the arch to give VSU a 60-57 lead. Redshirt junior Cam Hamilton sealed the game with 30 seconds left with a go-ahead layup to give the Blazers a 62-60 win.
 
The Blazers moved down two spots in the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division II rankings due to the game postponements, but still rank first among GSC teams with Alabama Huntsville ranked 20th and Union receiving votes.
 
Auburn Montgomery has yet to play a regular season game as their season opener against Shorter was postponed, making Saturday's game against the Blazers their first of the 2020-21 season.
 
Led by seventh year head coach Danny Michael Cheaney, the Warhawks return one of their top scorers from the 2019-20 season (15-14, 10-10 GSC) in Maharrith Jackson who averaged 13.6 ppg as well as 6.3 rpg. Auburn Montgomery averaged 77.7 ppg while allowing 77.8 ppg during their 2019-20 camping and also allowed 36.5 rebounds per game opposed to the teams 37.4. The Warhawks, on average, had a better shooting percentage (.441) than their opponents (.436) despite dropping 14 games.
 
The Blazers have yet to lose a game against the Warhawks with an overall record of 6-0. During their first matchup, which dates back to Jan. 19, 2018, the Blazers rolled to a 104-81 win at The Complex in Valdosta, Ga. The closest contest to date came just a month after the 23-point win with Valdosta edging out Auburn Montgomery by just two points with the help of a Winston Morgan three pointer with :30 left on the clock. The Blazers average 101 ppg while the Warhawks put up 86 ppg during their matchups.
 
The last matchup (Feb. 29, 2020) was a 98-86 Blazer victory in Montgomery, Ala. with five players from Valdosta finishing in double figures. Returners Agee and Burke Putnam finished the game second and third in points scored with 19 and 14, while also racking up seven and six rebounds. The Blazers shot .513 from the field and .381 from deep, while the Warhawks struggled to keep up, shooting .435 from the field and .346 from three. The majority of the Blazers points came from the paint, where they tacked on 60 of their 98 points from within.
 
The Blazers come back after their first win with Gallon atop the GSC leaderboard in average rebounds per game. Agee ranks second in the GSC in points per game and average 3 pointers made per game.
