VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State women's soccer team scored an early goal from sophomore
Kyleigh Reedy, but was unable to hang on as visiting Clayton State posted two scores in the first half for a 2-1 win the 2019 season-opener for the Blazers.
Reedy's goal came just 7:14 into the contest as junior
Lexie Hall pushed the ball ahead to Reedy and Clayton State goalkeeper Valentina Bonaiuto came out to challenge as Reedy pushed a ball past her for an open net score.
After the Blazers had the early momentum, Clayton State took over the possession and Janne Brouer scored off a corner kick from Moa Loftman in the 29
th minute as Brouer connected on a header from the far post for the equalizer.
Just 6:04 later, a costly turnover in the Blazers' back end allowed Clayton State's Manoly Baquerizo to score to the lower far post for a 2-1 score.
For the half, VSU had three shots, while the Lakers had seven. The Blazers had three, first half corner kicks, but were unable to convert.
In the second half, VSU tried to be more direct with attacks and was able to get off five shots and force Bonaiuto into five saves for the match, but was unable to get the equalizer.
For the match, VSH had eight shots with six on frame, while sophomore
Lauren Hicks led the team with three shots and two on frame. VSU sophomore goalkeeper
Samantha Blanford had eight saves, but surrendered two scores in 90 minutes.
Clayton State (2-0) had 16 shots and 10 on frame for the contest as Baquerizo had five shots and two on frame, along with the game winner.
The Blazers return to action next weekend as they travel to North Georgia for a 5 p.m. match on Friday, Sept. 13, while they travel to Young Harris for a 1 p.m. match on Sept. 15. Fans can find link to live stats and streaming of the games at vstateblazers.com on the women's soccer schedule page.
