Volleyball opens conference home slate against Lee and West Georgia

VALDOSTA, Ga.- The Valdosta State volleyball team opens up its home conference schedule this weekend, as they play host to Lee University and West Georgia. Lee will be the first opponent as the Blazers will face the Flames Friday night at 6:00 p.m. On Saturday, West Georgia travels to Titletown, as the Wolves and Blazers square off at 1:00 PM.
 
Who is Lee?
  • The Lee Flames come to Valdosta after dropping their last two matches, including its conference opener against West Georgia.
  • The Flames sit at 6-5 overall with an 0-1 record in Gulf South Conference play.
  • The Flames and Blazers have played one similar opponent, USC-Aiken, both falling three sets to none.
  • Lee enters this weekend with a .122 hitting percentage
  • Freshman outside hitter Abby Stroh leads the Flames in hitting percentage in kills (118), K/Set (3.28) and service attempts (21).
  • The Flames are led in defensively by senior Micaela McMichen (203 digs) and sophomore Savannah Chan (15 blocks).
  • Senior Hanna Matthews leads the Flames in assists with 351 this season.
  • Last year, the Blazers dropped its only match against the Flames, losing three sets to none.
 
 
Who is West Georgia?
  • West Georgia enters this weekend with a 5-6 record overall and 1-0 record in Gulf South Conference play.
  • The Wolves defeated Lee University , 3-0, in their first conference match of the season on Tuesday.
  • Freshman Tierra White leads the Wolves in kills (118) and blocks (35).
  • White also leads the Gulf South in hitting percentage (.401)
  • Senior Madi Fleming is tops on the team and in the GSC in assists with 374.
  • Last season, the Blazers split two matches with the Wolves.
 
What have the Blazers done recently?
  • The Blazers are riding a hot streak, as they are 5-1 over the last six matches.
  • Senior Kayla Widera continues her amazing season ,leading the conference in blocks with 66.
  • Tammy Reyes Perez is coming off her best week , earning Steel's Jewelry Blazer Athlete of the Week.
  • Perez recorded two double-doubles with 131 total assists for an 8.73 average per set, while recording 24 kills in 52 swings for a .365 percentage
  •  She also had four aces with 46 digs and assisted on two blocks
  • VSU comes off one of its toughest non-conference schedules in recent years with an impressive 9-5 record.
  • The Blazers lead the Gulf South Conference in blocks with 121.5 on the season.
