YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Valdosta State senior
Ashley Lewis scored two goals in the first half as the Blazers blanked Young Harris in the first meeting between the two teams 2-0 Sunday afternoon.
With the win, the Blazers improved to 1-2 on the year and Young Harris fell to 0-4. VSU held a 12-8 lead in shots and 8-2 in shots on frame as Lewis had four shots and three on goal. Her first goal came in the 18
thminute as she blasted a shot from the corner just inside the 18-yard box to the upper corner past Young Harris keeper Pien Van Kampen for a 1-0 lead.
Lewis hit pay dirt in the 27
thminute as she scored with a shot to the top left corner and a 2-0 lead. It marked Lewis' first game winner of the season and tenth for her career. She now has 24 goals for her career with three assists and 51 points which leads the school record book for both career goals and points.
The Blazers put up there first clean sheet of the season as junior
Caroline Embler went all nintey minutes between the posts with two saves. It was her eighth shutout of her career. Senior
Taylor Snell had three shots with one on frame for the Blazers, while sophomore
Lauren Hicks added two shots with one on goal.
VSU also head a 4-2 lead in corner kicks and it marked the first time Young Harris had been blanked this season. The Blazers continue on the road on Wednesday, Sept. 18, as they travel to Albany, Ga., for a match with Albany State, scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
