MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Valdosta State women's tennis season came to an end Friday in a 4-0 loss to No. 17 West Alabama in one of two Gulf South Conference Championship semifinals at Lagoon Park in Montgomery, Ala.
VSU finishes the season at 7-14, while West Alabama advances to its first Gulf South Conference Championship match Saturday morning. UWA took the doubles points with wins at Nos. 2 and 3 as Sarah Manseri and Lilana Aracuz won at No. 2, 6-3 over sophomore
Hera Bork Brynjarsdottir and freshman
Eva Rivoal. Tiger duo of Danya Hukasian and Haina Franco won at No. 3 over VSU freshmen tandem of
Birte Langestein and
Rachel Chan-Yaneff, 6-2.
In singles, Andrea Tomassone downed Bork Brynjarsdottir, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 5 for a 2-0 lead, while Franco won at No. 3 over Langestein, 6-1, 6-2, for a 3-0 lead. Georgina Salom won at No. 4 over Rivoal for the win, 6-4, 6-3.
Despite the loss, VSU junior Estee Widdershoven won the opening set at No. 1, 7-5 and senior
Daniella Barta won the first set of her match at No. 2, 6-2 prior to the match being decided. VSU ended the season 7-6 after opening the season 0-8.
VSU returns a majority of its team for another run at the GSC title in 2019-2020.
