JACKSON, Miss. – The Valdosta State baseball team got back on the winning track with a doubleheader split at Mississippi College on Saturday. VSU won the opener 9-1 and MC won the nightcap 5-4 in 11 innings.
In the opener, VSU was led by a 2 for 5 performance from junior
Jowenrick Daantji as he scored a run and drove in two, while junior
Logan Stephens went 2 for 3 with a run scored and two RBI, including a home run. Senior
DJ King went 2 for 5 with three runs scored and a RBI.
Junior
Jonathan Gettys (2-2) took the win in eight innings, allowing three hits, one earned run, walked two and fanned ten.
In the nightcap, the Blazers tied the game in the fourth with two runs on an infield single from Stephens and an error on a failed pickoff attempt plated the second run.
The game remained tied until the tenth as VSU scored twice in the frame on a single to center from Danntji and a single through the right side from King. A two RBI double by the Choctaws as VSU had a dropped foul ball error earlier in the frame. MC could have won the game there as it left the bags full.
In the bottom of the 11
th, a leadoff walk and sacrifice bunt moved the Choctaws into position and a ground out moved the runner to third. MC used a single down the left field line for the walk-off win.
Junior
Sean Gabel (2-1) took the loss in 1.1 innings, allowing two hits, one earned run, walked two and fanned two.
The teams will be back in action and back at MC's campus on Monday for the rubber-match game beginning at 1 p.m. ET.
