Lady Blazers Put Four-Game Winning Streak on the Line at West Georgia and Shorter

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State women's basketball team matched its season-best winning streak with a commanding 83-44 win over Montevallo last week and now will return to the road at West Georgia and Shorter this week.

Heading into the week, VSU is 15-6 overall and 9-4 in Gulf South Conference play.  The Lady Blazers are fourth in the league standings as Union leads the way at 13-1, followed by Lee (11-2) and West Florida is 11-3.  VSU is one game ahead of Alabama Huntsville (8-5).  
 
West Georgia is 6-7 in league play and 11-8 overall as the Wolves have lost their last two games and four of five and won six of seven prior to that.  Shorter is 1-19 overall and 0-13 in conference play and has lost its last 16 games.  
 
With the 83-44 win over Montevallo last Thursday, VSU scored its most points in a game this season and its largest margin of victory for the year.  The Lady Blazers shot 48.4 percent on 31 of 64, while going 9 of 24 from range and 12 of 17 from the line.  Senior Crystal Townsend tallied a double-double with 24 points and 12 rebounds, while sophomore Kayla Bonilla added 12 points as VSU had balanced scoring throughout its lineup.  

VSU led 34-27 at intermission and then outscored Montevallo 49-17 in the second half and 36-12 in the fourth quarter.  VSU shot a blistering 12 of 16 from the field in the fourth quarter and shot 18 of 32 from the field for the second half.  A total of 48 points came off either turnovers or second opportunities for the Blazers.  VSU held Montevallo to just 27.7 percent shooting and the second time this season VSU has held UM under 30 percent from the field.  No Falcon was in double figures in the game also marking the second time this season VSU has held Montevallo without a double-figure scorer.
 
For the season, VSU is shooting .393 from the field on 483 of 1229, while going 109 of 357 (.305) from beyond the arc and 270 of 436 from the line (.619).  VSU is averaging 42.1 rebounds per game and allowing 33.8.  The Lady Blazers are scoring 64.0 points per game and allowing 56.6.  
 
Individually, Bonilla leads three players in double figures at 11.6 points per game.  She is 81 of 196 from the field (.413), while going 17 of 50 from range and is a team-best 64 of 87 from the line (.736).  Bonilla has a team-high 70 assists and 41 steals. Townsend also averages 11.6 points per game and leads the team in rebounding at 7.5 per game.  Townsend is 86 of 183 from the field (.470) to lead the team, while going 54 of 74 from the line (.730).  Senior Sonya Franklin is third in scoring at 10.0 points per game on 83 of 176 (.472) from the floor.   
 
Nationally speaking, VSU is 29thin offensive rebounds per game to lead the GSC at a 15.0 average per game, while ranking 19thin rebounding margin at 8.3 for second in the league.  VSU is 30thin the nation in total rebounds with 885, while ranking 40thin rebounds per game (42.1) and 23rdin scoring defense, holding teams to just 56.6 points per game.  VSU is holding teams to a .272 average from beyond the arc, which is good for 23rdnationally.  Townsend is third in the league in offensive rebounds per game at 3.0.  
 
Last time out against West Georgia, VSU dropped a 70-65 decision at The Complex.  Senior Maddy Corazza had a team-high 18 points, while UWG's Aysha Harris had 26 points to lead all-scorers.  VSU held a 48-47 lead through three quarters, but was unable to hang on, as it was outscored 23-17 in the final frame.  VSU cut the deficit to four with 42 seconds left at 67-63.  The Lady Blazers were just 3 of 16 from range and 10 of 21 from the line, while shooting 41.9 percent for the game.  UWG shot 46 percent and was 8 of 20 from beyond the arc, while going 16 of 22 from the line.  
 
Against Shorter, VSU pulled out a hard-fought 72-65 decision behind four starters in double figures as Franklin and Townsend had 15 points each.  VSU shot much better at 56.3 percent and was 15 of 22 from the line with three triples.  Three of Shorter's players accounted for 50 of the team's 65 points. 
 
Following the week, the Blazers return home to host Mississippi College and Delta State next week at The Complex.
