Robb’s Walk-Off Home Run Versus No. 3 North Georgia Highlights Final Day of Gulf Shores Invitational

GULF SHORES, Ala.-  The No. 22 Lady Blazers softball completed their opening weekend sweep with a 3-2 walk-off victory over No. 3 North Georgia before ending the day with a run-rule win over Miles College, 14-0.

Game one started in favor of VSU as junior Dream Aaron blasted her second home-run of the weekend with a solo shot over the fence in the second inning to put the Blazers ahead of the No. 3-ranked Nighthawks early on.  Keeping things going, junior Taylor Strickland singled into right field, advanced on a wild pitch, and was brought around by a double down the line by Haley Garrett to put the Lady Blazers up 2-0.

The Nighthawks capitalized in the third on a Blazer error as they strung together two singles to plate Hobby Gregory and earn their first run of the game. Heading into the fourth, three Nighthawk hits allowed for UNG to plate Kaylee Womack and tie things up at 2-2.

The play of the game came in the bottom of the seventh when sophomore Kiley Robb smoked a walk-off home-run to lift the Lady Blazers to victory in true fashion. The home-run marked the sophomore's first career as a Blazer along with her first career hit at VSU.

Valdosta State strung together seven hits in the game from seven different players while North Georgia tallied eight. Blazer pitcher Caylie Van Auken recorded four strikeouts in seven complete innings with eight hits allowed in 30 batters faced. The win marked Van Auken's second straight win to bring her record to a perfect 2-0.

Game two featured an offensive onslaught as VSU toppled Miles College 14-0 in five complete innings of play to earn the weekend sweep.

The first four runs came early in the third when four Blazers crossed the plate, unearned, off of a double by Robb and a single by Natalia Bellinger. In the fourth, Strickland tripled to right field which allowed Logan Hill to score and extend the lead to 5-0. VSU added two more as Haley Garrett singled down the left field line to plate Bellinger and Strickland, and put VSU up 7-0.

VSU capitalized in the fifth when a double by Aaron allowed Hill and junior Lacey Crandall to notch two more runs. Bellinger struck again as she singled through the left side to advance Strickland and plated Baylee Everson to make the score 10-0. Freshman Samantha Richards saw her Blazer debut where she picked up a walk which plated Strickland and extended the lead. Jordenne Gaten notched a single on a 2-0 count to score Kiley Robb and finish out the fifth with a 14-0 lead.

Senior pitcher Kasie Johnson picked up the win on the rubber to move to 2-0 on the season. She recorded five complete innings of work and allowed just one hit with no walks and six strikeouts.

The Blazers 14-0 victory over Miles marked their fourth straight of the weekend as they moved to 4-0 on the season.

Up next, the No. 22 ranked Blazers move their attention to the NFCA Leadoff Classic set to take place in Clearwater, Fla. next weekend. The tournament will kick off on Friday night as VSU will face Palm Beach Atlantic at 2:30 p.m., before a matchup with Southern Arkansas at 4:30 p.m. The weekend will continue with games against Lenoir-Rhyne at noon and then Azusa Pacific out of California at 4:30 p.m. In the last game of the series, the Lady Blazers will face the Spartans out of Tampa on Sunday morning starting at 11 a.m.
